About this Role

Habs has been awarded Independent School of the Year 2025, with Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools receiving both the award for Outstanding Educational Partnerships and the overall top accolade of Independent School of the Year 2025. This recognition reflects our long-term commitment to social impact and the deep, sustained collaborations we continue to build with our state sector partners. It is an exciting time to join our community.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Teacher of Latin to join our vibrant and intellectually curious department from September 2026. This is a part-time position (0.4–0.6 FTE), teaching Latin to students in Years 7 and 8.

At Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, Classics is a thriving and highly valued subject. Latin is a core part of the curriculum in Years 7 and 8, before becoming an optional subject from Year 9. Classical Greek is introduced in Year 10, and both Latin and Greek are offered through to A Level. In the Sixth Form, students benefit from our unique Nexus programme, combining teaching with our partner school, Haberdashers’ Girls’ School.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a department that is deeply committed to academic excellence and enrichment beyond the classroom. Our students engage with Classics through a wide range of opportunities, including overseas trips to Italy and Greece, regular visits to the British Museum, and a joint weekly Classical Society with the Girls’ School, featuring student-led talks and visiting speakers. We also run inter-house competitions, outreach work with local state schools, and a popular Linguistics Club.

We are looking for a colleague who:

  • Has a strong knowledge of Latin (at least to GCSE level)
  • Is passionate about inspiring younger learners in Years 7 and 8
  • Is keen to contribute to the wider life of the department and school, including trips and co-curricular activities
  • Will embrace opportunities to engage with colleagues and students across both Habs Boys and Habs Girls
  • A knowledge of Classical Greek would be an advantage, but is not essential.

Our teaching is supported by a modern, digitally enabled environment. All students are equipped with laptops and styluses, and our curriculum is delivered through a well-established scheme of work based on the Cambridge Latin Course.

What we offer:

  • We offer a competitive salary, commensurate with the candidate’s experience
  • Approximately 17 weeks holiday per year.
  • Private Pension Scheme through Aegon with four flexible options and generous employer contributions.
  • Additional life insurance cover and income protection.
  • Access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), providing confidential support and advice.
  • Financial assistance for further qualifications.
  • Extensive professional development and training opportunities.
  • Free lunch and refreshments.
  • Free onsite parking and access to travel on the school’s extensive coach network.
  • Complimentary access to state-of-the-art sports facilities, including gym, swimming pool, and fitness classes.
  • Wellbeing initiatives such as yoga, mindfulness sessions, and health checks.
  • Access to an online GP service for quick and convenient healthcare advice.
  • Access to Vivup, our staff benefits platform offering discounts, financial advice, and wellbeing resources.

Applications will be reviewed as they arrive, and we reserve the right to close this vacancy sooner, please apply as soon as possible.

Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful candidate will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced check. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
