About this Role

Assistant Caretaker

The Assistant Caretaker plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment where pupils, staff and visitors can thrive. Working closely with the Caretaker, you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the school site through a combination of practical maintenance, site security, health and safety, facilities management, and teamwork.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys problem-solving, takes pride in maintaining high standards, and has strong DIY and practical maintenance skills.

Key Responsibilities

Security and Site Management

  • Assist with the routine and non-routine opening, closing and securing of school buildings and grounds.
  • Support the implementation of site security procedures to help maintain a safe environment.
  • Help prevent unauthorised access and trespassing on school premises.
  • Monitor site access and assist in preventing unauthorised parking.
  • Provide emergency access to the school during adverse weather conditions or other emergency situations.

Facilities and Cleaning Standards

  • Support the organisation and allocation of cleaning duties.
  • Monitor cleaning standards and help maintain a clean, safe and attractive environment throughout the school.
  • Carry out cleaning duties within designated areas when required.
  • Assist with floor maintenance.
  • Ensure outdoor areas, pathways and play spaces remain clean and litter-free.

Health and Safety

  • Carry out regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure prompt action is taken.
  • Support the school's health and safety procedures and contribute to maintaining a safe environment for all users.
  • Assist the  Caretaker with risk assessments and safety monitoring.

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Undertake a wide range of minor repairs, maintenance tasks and improvements across the school site.
  • Maintain and repair basic tools and equipment to ensure they remain safe and operational.
  • Monitor the condition of buildings, fixtures and equipment, reporting larger repairs or specialist works as required.
  • Support the operation and monitoring of heating systems, ensuring comfortable temperatures and an adequate hot water supply.
  • Assist with boiler room checks and routine maintenance.
  • Inspect drains and gullies, clearing minor blockages and ensuring effective drainage.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations including fire, flood, break-ins, accidents or significant damage.
  • Ensure all caretaking and cleaning equipment is maintained in a safe working condition.

Contractor and Site Support

  • Welcome and direct contractors to relevant work areas.
  • Assist in monitoring completed work and reporting on the quality of maintenance and repair activities.
  • Report damage, defects and maintenance issues promptly and accurately.

Stock and Resource Management

  • Receive deliveries and ensure materials, equipment and supplies are stored safely and appropriately.
  • Monitor stock levels and ensure essential supplies, including cleaning materials, fuel and replacement light bulbs, are readily available.

School Operations Support

  • Assist with the setting up and movement of furniture, equipment and resources for events, examinations and school activities.
  • Support the wider school team with practical tasks that contribute to the smooth running of the site.
  • Deputise for the Caretaker during periods of absence, ensuring continuity of service and site management.
