About this Role

Colyton Primary Academy is a small school (NOR 139) in the historic East Devon town of Colyton.  The school is situated in the heart of the town and pride themselves with having strong links with the Colyton community.

Colyton Primary has a commitment to inclusion for all children.  The school has pupils with EHCPs, Pupils on SEND support plans and those whom receive in-school support for additional needs. 

Colyton Primary Academy is within easy reach to the A35 and the A3052.

The SENDCo role will be pivotal in leading this area of the school as part of the leadership team, as well as improving outcomes for SEND learners across the whole school.  

At Colyton, we are looking for someone who has high levels of self-organisation, enjoys communications with a wide range of stakeholders and believes in teamwork and collaboration.  You will, in turn, work with supportive staff team and benefit from opportunities to work with other schools across the trust.

The focus of the job role will be ensuring students with a SEN or disability have full entitlement to the curriculum and to provide professional guidance to colleagues. The successful candidate will be able to lead, manage and oversee the day-to-day operation of the school's SEND policy, encourage good working practices and provide SEND leadership, direction and support to the senior leadership team, teaching and support staff and have a strong commitment to high standards of achievement for all.  

Ideally the successful candidate will be someone who is SENDCO trained (or be willing to undertake the NPQ SEND Award)  and who holds Qualified Teacher Status and has experience of teaching a range of SEN across the whole primary age range. Our hardworking, enthusiastic SENDCO will have an excellent understanding of the principles of inclusive teaching and of the statutory duties in relation to SEND and equality. They will also be strong in the use of data to track progress and identify needs.

The ideal candidate will: 

  • Have an exceptional understanding of teaching in the primary phase
  • Has passion and drive to make a positive difference to the lived experience of pupils with additional needs
  • Will be a qualified SENDCO or have relevant experience and be willing to undertake the NPQ SEND if no SEND Award.
  • Have an excellent understanding of the SEND code of practice
  • Have both an excellent understanding of pupil progress and a willingness to embrace change
  • Be committed to the view that children with SEND needs should aspire to flourish and attain high outcomes.
  • Be open to new approaches to learning and teaching
  • Be an excellent team player 
  • Be someone who has high levels of self-organisation, enjoys communications with a wide range of stakeholders and believes in teamwork and collaboration
