Are you a passionate teacher looking to build a career in special education? Do you want to work within a forward‑thinking academy trust that supports and values high‑quality practice? An exciting opportunity is now available to join our outstanding school.

 Qualities we value

  • Championing personalised learning for pupils with diverse needs
  • Supporting communication, confidence, and independence
  • Creating calm, structured, and engaging learning experiences
  • Dedicated to highquality teaching in a supportive SEN environment
  • Brings resilience, perseverance, and a love for teaching that inspires and motivates learners

Our pupils have a wide range of complex learning needs. While prior SEND experience is desirable, it is not essential, as we provide a comprehensive LEAPS training programme alongside full mentoring to support the development of skills and confidence in this area. We are seeking inspirational teachers who are committed to helping young people achieve their full potential and who share and actively promote the vision and values of our school. This is a permanent position with a potential start date of September 2026.

James Rennie School is a well‑established special school located in the Kingstown area of Carlisle, with an additional Sixth Form site at St Edmunds Park. We currently support up to 217 pupils aged 3–19 within well‑equipped, modern facilities. As a dynamic and caring school with a warm, friendly ethos, we expect all staff to reflect these values in their daily practice. Flexibility, initiative, and a proactive approach are essential, and a willingness to work across all age ranges is desirable.

Staff who join our school will have a rewarding opportunity to deliver a unique, personalised curriculum that prioritises what our pupils need to learn and the ways in which they learn best.

For further information, please contact our Headteacher, Kerry Dunbobbin, via email at kerry@jamesrennie.cumbria.sch.uk, or visit the Vacancies section of our website at www.jamesrennie.cumbria.sch.uk.

James Rennie School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Therefore, an enhanced DBS check including the barred list will be required for the successful candidate and other procedures and checks will be followed as laid out in our Safeguarding Policy

Across our schools, we are committed to creating a culture where all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or background are respected, represented, and supported.

We understand the role of inclusive education in preparing young people for a complex and diverse society. We challenge discrimination, recognise and celebrate difference, and work continuously to promote equity and opportunity in everything we do.

Our commitment to inclusion runs through our curriculum, our staffing and leadership, our policies, and our day-to-day interactions. We strive to practise cultural humility, anti-racism, and equitable approaches that meet the needs of all our pupils.
