Job overview

Part Time Teacher / Lecturer of Optical Science & Ophthalmic Dispensing

Aston University Engineering Academy and Sixth Form (AUEA) is the sponsored university Technical College by Aston University, located on Aston's City Centre Campus. Since Sept 2024, AUEA is the national lead for the new Optical Science T Level Qualification for Learners aged 16-19 years old providing pathways to optical science, and DO apprenticeships as well as undergraduate optometry HE courses.

Our course is delivered by University and industry Optometrists and we are now seeking a passionate Teacher / Lecturer of Ophthalmic Dispensing.

This is an exciting opportunity for an DO specialist looking to grow and develop as an outstanding practitioner, including opportunity to gain teaching qualifications. You will join a friendly, supportive and experienced team of Health specialists in modern facilities with dedicated Optom lab and simulation optician store.

The role is offered at 2 days part time flexi, allowing the opportunity to work around existing commitments in industry or HE.

Our location next to our sponsor Aston University means that we can access resources, and teaching and learning spaces like no other school. (About Aston University Engineering Academy)

Our T-Level course requires students to spend 20% of time on placements and we are fortunate to be partnered with Specsavers, Boots, Vision Express and many other independent retailers.

AUEA is a highly diverse institution with learners and staff from all communities and backgrounds from across the West Midlands. We strongly welcome applicants from within our local communities with a passion to increase our young people's social mobility and future opportunities.

There couldn't be a more thrilling time to join our team.

We are seeking a professional who is:

  • Experience in training or lecturing desired, but training will be provided.
  • Have high expectations of students.
  • Innovative and creative with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Passionate about Optometry & Ophthalmic Dispensing

As a valued member of AUEA we will offer:

  • A family-feel environment centred around the health and well-being of staff and students.
  • A designated Staff Benefits, training and Health Care package including a family day off per year.
  • Personalised CPD and Career development program including teacher training
  • Opportunity for experience and development as part of our Armed Forces and Combined Cadet Force partnerships.

AUEA is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicants will be subject to an enhanced DBS check. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.K.

From April 2026, Aston University Engineering Academy (AUEA) will be part of the new Aston University STEM Education Academy Trust, which brings together our successful UTC (AUEA) and new Aston University Mathematics School. All new staff joining AUEA from April 2026 will join the new Multi Academy Trust.
