Place of work:    Comberton Village College, Comberton

Are you passionate about teaching Geography in a school that values intellectual curiosity, ambition and exceptional standards? This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving, collaborative and highly successful department where geographical thinking, enquiry and fieldwork are central to teaching and learning.

Why teach Geography at Comberton Village College?

– A rich, ambitious and knowledge-led curriculum:

Geography at Comberton inspires pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Across Key Stages 3–5, pupils develop a deep understanding of physical and human geography, exploring diverse places, landscapes and environments, and the complex interactions between people and the natural world. The curriculum builds coherently from foundational geographical knowledge and skills to sophisticated analytical and evaluative thinking at GCSE and A Level.

– A subject built on enquiry, fieldwork and real-world relevance:

Geography lessons at Comberton emphasise enquiry-based learning, contemporary issues and the application of knowledge to real-world contexts. Pupils develop strong cartographic, data analysis and evaluative skills through the use of maps, GIS, photographs, graphs and field data. Fieldwork is an integral part of the curriculum, enabling pupils to investigate physical and human environments first-hand and apply their learning beyond the classroom.

– Outstanding outcomes and high expectations:

Geography is a popular and successful subject at Comberton, with strong uptake at both GCSE and A Level. Pupils achieve consistently high outcomes across the ability range, supported by high expectations, carefully sequenced teaching and a strong focus on developing extended writing, analytical thinking and independent study skills.

– A vibrant and ambitious extra-curricular and enrichment programme:

Geography at Comberton extends well beyond the classroom. The department runs an ambitious programme of enrichment and fieldwork opportunities, including local field trips, UK-based residential fieldwork and international study visits visiting Iceland with GCSE students. Opportunities include local physical and human fieldwork, GCSE residential fieldwork in the UK and A Level fieldwork to support students with the completion of their NEA. Strong links with the Geographical Association and Cambridge University further enrich students’ experience of the subject.

– A strong post-16 pathway:

A Level Geography at Comberton Sixth Form is a stimulating, contemporary and academically rigorous course that equips students with the knowledge and skills required for a wide range of university courses and careers. Students study a balance of physical and human geography alongside an independent fieldwork investigation, developing their ability to think critically about global systems, environmental change and geographical futures.

What we offer:

A school culture that prioritises staff wellbeing and professional growth

Engaged, respectful and highly motivated pupils who embody our ethos of Caring, Confident and Capable

Excellent facilities, strong departmental support and a genuine commitment to work–life balance

‘Pupils here are not taught just to pass exams. They acquire the skills and knowledge they need to be first-rate scientists, historians, and artists, among others.’ (Ofsted, November 2024).

We are a highly successful, community mixed comprehensive school with Teaching School status in a pleasant rural setting only 5 miles from the centre of Cambridge. We currently have around 2000 11–18 pupils on roll, including a thriving sixth form centre opened in September 2011.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Teacher of Geography who is fully committed to providing pupils with an exceptional experience of the subject across the full age and ability range. This role may offer the opportunity to teach on our popular and successful A Level Geography course and would suit either an ECT or an experienced practitioner. The Geography department is a friendly, collaborative and hard-working group of teachers who all share a common enthusiasm for Geography and students’ education.  It is essential that the successful candidate is a strong team player and enthusiastic about contributing to our extensive programme of fieldwork and enrichment.

Our pupils are well motivated, staff morale is excellent, and examination results at KS4 and KS5 are consistently strong across our comprehensive intake. The school has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted over many years, with our most recent inspection in November 2024 achieving Outstanding in all categories.

If you are enthusiastic, inspiring and committed to high-quality Geography teaching and fieldwork, we would love to hear from you.
