About this Role

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and versatile professional to join the Hurst community as Assistant Librarian & Assistant Head of Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), starting 1 September 2026.

The Library is a popular and welcoming space that supports reading and learning across the College.  As part of a small, dedicated library team, you will contribute to this ethos, whilst also playing a key role in the running of our successful EPQ programme.

This is a genuinely varied and active role, requiring a wide range of skills and knowledge. You will report to the Head of the Library & Head of EPQ, who in turn reports to the Deputy Head – Academic. Alongside traditional library responsibilities, including helping to run lunchtime clubs (an interest in Dungeons and Dragons would be a key advantage!), you will assist with the management and administration of the EPQ programme and supervise your own EPQ group. There is also the opportunity to take on a tutor group.

Working at Hurst

Hurst is one of Britain's leading independent schools, offering a vibrant and supportive environment for both pupils and staff. With almost 1,300 pupils across our Senior and Prep Schools, we combine academic ambition with a strong sense of community and a rich co-curricular programme.

Hurst is a place of genuine momentum. From the classroom to the sports field, and the theatre to the boarding house, life here is rich, varied, and relentlessly rewarding.

Ours is a community that sets its sights on excellence - not as a destination, but as a daily habit. The people who thrive here are those who bring the same ambition, resilience, and commitment that we ask of our pupils.

We don't just teach; we coach, mentor, direct, lead, and inspire, often all in the same day! The role you play here extends far beyond your core responsibilities, and that's precisely what makes it so fulfilling. If you're someone who is energised by variety, motivated by challenge, and genuinely excited by the opportunity to shape young people both inside and outside the classroom then you'll feel right at home.

You'll enjoy working in a stunning rural setting while remaining well-connected. We're just 20 minutes from the city and beaches of Brighton & Hove, and London is under an hour away by train.

This isn't just a job. It's a commitment to something bigger. For the right person, there is nowhere more exciting to be.

The Role

Library Duties

Your library responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

       Supervising the Library and covering for the Head of the Library in her absence;

       Helping to organise activities and lunchtime clubs run in the Library;

       Managing pupils using the Library and monitoring pupil attendance;

       Supporting the school's participation in the Southern Schools Book Award (SSBA) with the Year 9s;

       Assisting with the creation of display and publicity material, as well as the organisation of events;

       Helping to co-ordinate the library's social media presence, including the weekly current affairs newsletter;

       Supporting the development of information literacy within the school;

       Cataloguing, processing and preparing resources;

       Assisting with the management of Library resources;

       Demonstrating Library resources and using them to assist pupils seeking information;

       Using the Library Management System (LMS) to manage resources, issue and return books, and more;

       Maintaining the Library as a tidy, accessible and vibrant space;

       Contributing to the documentation and maintenance of Library procedures;

       Other library tasks and duties as may reasonably be required by the Head of the Library.

EPQ Duties

Your EPQ responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

       Helping to oversee the EPQ programme including any administration involved;

       Supporting the team of EPQ supervisors;

       Supervising your own EPQ group;

       Disseminating a weekly email to EPQ supervisors;

       Helping to deliver the taught skills programme;

       Helping to organise the presentation afternoon;

       Meeting with designated EPQ supervisors on a fortnightly basis;

       Monitoring the progress of EPQ groups using a tracking spreadsheet;

       Helping to internally moderate EPQ projects.

Who We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will be organised, enthusiastic and genuinely passionate about books, reading, and independent learning. You will be someone who thrives in a busy, pupil-facing environment and who brings warmth, initiative, and professionalism to everything they do.

We are looking for someone who:

       Has experience in a library or educational setting (or demonstrable transferable skills);

       Is confident managing and engaging with young people across a range of year groups;

       Is highly organised, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously;

       Communicates clearly and professionally, both in writing and in person;

       Is enthusiastic about promoting reading, research skills, and information literacy;

       Has a genuine interest in academic enrichment and independent research programmes such as the EPQ;

       Is comfortable working both independently and as part of a small, close-knit team;
