About this Role

Health Care Assistant - 11.00 – 17.30 (with 30 minutes for lunch break). Term time only.

Habs has been awarded Independent School of the Year 2025, with Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools receiving both the award for Outstanding Educational Partnerships and the overall top accolade of Independent School of the Year 2025. This recognition reflects our long-term commitment to social impact and the deep, sustained collaborations we continue to build with our state sector partners. It is an exciting time to join our community.

At Habs Boys, we know that outstanding pastoral care is fundamental to helping every student thrive. Our Medical Centre is at the heart of that commitment, providing a safe, welcoming and professional environment where students receive expert care, reassurance and support throughout the school day.

We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Health Care Assistant to join our dedicated Medical Centre team. This is a rewarding opportunity to play an important role in supporting the physical health and emotional wellbeing of our students while working alongside experienced nurses and a highly collaborative pastoral team.

Whether you are providing first aid, supporting students with long-term medical conditions, communicating with parents or helping prepare medical information for school trips, your work will make a meaningful difference every day. This is a varied role that requires empathy, professionalism and the ability to remain calm in a fast-paced environment where no two days are ever quite the same.

About the role

Working as part of our Medical Centre team, you will:

  • Support the school nurses in assessing and caring for students with minor illnesses and injuries, helping them return to lessons safely and confidently wherever possible.
  • Provide emergency first aid to students, staff and visitors when required.
  • Assist in supporting students with ongoing medical conditions, including asthma, epilepsy, diabetes and allergies, ensuring they can participate fully in school life.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records, communicating effectively with parents, colleagues and healthcare professionals where appropriate.
  • Assist with health checks, immunisation programmes and the preparation of medical information and first aid provision for educational visits.
  • Help maintain a well-equipped, welcoming and efficient Medical Centre, ensuring supplies and equipment are always ready for use.
  • Work closely with the wider pastoral team to identify patterns, support student wellbeing and escalate safeguarding or pastoral concerns appropriately.

About you

We are looking for someone who is approachable, organised and genuinely enjoys supporting young people.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience working in a healthcare, first aid, school or similar caring environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
  • Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail, particularly when maintaining confidential records.
  • Good IT skills, including experience using Microsoft Office and electronic record systems.
  • The ability to remain calm, compassionate and professional when responding to emergencies or managing competing priorities.
  • A willingness to undertake relevant training, including Paediatric First Aid, Basic Life Support, anaphylaxis management and safeguarding.
  • Most importantly, you will share our commitment to delivering exceptional pastoral care and helping every student feel safe, supported and able to flourish.

What we offer:

  • A competitive salary, commensurate with the candidate’s experience
  • The opportunity to work in a vibrant, ambitious, and supportive school community alongside exceptional colleagues who are deeply committed to excellence and to one another
  • Generous private pension scheme through Aegon with substantial employer contributions
  • Life assurance and income protection cover, providing financial security and support should you be unable to work due to long-term illness
  • Access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), offering confidential support, guidance, and advice
  • Extensive professional development and training opportunities within a culture that values growth and continuous learning
  • Free lunch and refreshments during the working day
  • Free onsite parking and access to the Schools’ extensive coach network
  • Free access to excellent sports facilities, including the gym, swimming pool, and fitness classes
  • Wellbeing initiatives and programmes, including yoga, mindfulness sessions, and health checks
  • Access to an online GP service, providing quick and convenient healthcare advice
  • Access to Vivup, the staff benefits platform offering discounts, financial advice, and wellbeing resources
  • Cycle-to-Work Scheme and sustainable travel initiatives, including Octopus Electric Vehicles
