The Science Department at Haberdashers' Boys Schools is a thriving and successful faculty, committed to delivering outstanding practical science education. We are seeking an organised, enthusiastic and proactive General Laboratory Technician to join our dedicated team and support the delivery of high-quality practical lessons across the sciences, with a particular focus on Chemistry.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a scientific background and strong practical laboratory skills who enjoys working in a busy educational environment and contributing to students' learning experiences.

Hours: 8:00am – 4:00pm - Term-time plus 15 days working pattern (including INSET days).

About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Chemistry, you will play a key role in preparing practical lessons and maintaining laboratory facilities to ensure the smooth running of the Science Department.

Working closely with teaching staff and fellow technicians, you will prepare apparatus and materials for practical lessons up to A Level, support departmental activities and ensure laboratories operate safely and efficiently.

The successful candidate will be highly organised, able to work independently and as part of a team, and committed to maintaining high standards of health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare apparatus, equipment and materials for Chemistry practical lessons up to A Level.
  • Support practical lessons in Biology and Physics as required.
  • Assist with the development and trialling of new practical activities and assessments.
  • Ensure all preparation work complies with departmental procedures and CLEAPSS health and safety guidance.
  • Maintain laboratories and preparation rooms to a high standard.
  • Check laboratories at the end of the school day to ensure equipment is stored safely and gas supplies are switched off.
  • Support science outreach activities and departmental events.
  • Assist with the preparation of laboratories and displays for Open Days.
  • Liaise with teaching staff and technicians across the Science Department to support the delivery of practical science.
  • Provide support for educational visits and trips where appropriate.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people.

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A scientific background, ideally with practical experience in Chemistry.
  • Strong practical laboratory skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to prioritise tasks and work effectively under pressure.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the School.
  • A proactive approach and the ability to use initiative.
  • Flexibility, adaptability and a positive attitude.
  • A willingness to undertake further training, including Health & Safety and First Aid training.
