About Thornhill Primary School

Thornhill Primary School is a thriving and inclusive village primary school, serving this busy west Cumbrian coastal community. We offer pupils a friendly and caring environment in which to succeed, ensuring they have the strong academic foundations needed for a happy future life. We are proud of our heritage and proud to be part of West Lakes because together we encourage our pupils to think big and aim for the highest results and greatest success at school and beyond.

Our vision is to succeed in ‘Changing Lives through Learning’ by providing high quality teaching and opportunities for our children to grow as responsible citizens.  Respect, tolerance, honesty and positive behaviour are expected at all times.  We ensure all of our young people are listened to, all are valued and through encouragement and the celebration of successes, we develop pupils’ self-esteem and confidence.

Your child will be challenged and supported to achieve across the full breadth of our engaging curriculum. Our staff work to instill an appreciation of the value of knowledge and a life-long love of learning.

Thornhill is a very special place to be. We have a collective passion for learning which permeates all we do; we work to change lives through learning.   Thornhill Primary School is a vibrant, flourishing school which:

  • Promotes positivity, happiness, well-being and self-esteem
  • Meets the needs of every child across the whole curriculum
  • Focuses on the development of language and communication in every aspect of school life
  • Provides a broad, engaging and relevant curriculum
  • Plays a prominent and active part of our local community

OUR VALUES

We believe that our central role in school is to ensure learning. Our pupils need to learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for their futures as citizens of the world.

INTRODUCTION FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

Working within Thornhill Primary School is a privilege and I am thrilled to hold the position of Headteacher. Thornhill is a small school with wonderful staff, children and families at the heart of the community.

The school is a very special place and each child is valued and supported to be the very best they can be. We have high expectations and standards and work to ensure that all our children are given the best possible opportunities to learn and develop. Our staff work in partnership with home and this supports our children along their learning journey.

School is a happy and safe place to be and as staff support one another, so do our children. The nurture of people is of upmost importance and this allows them to flourish and reach their potential. There is a positive approach to mental health and wellbeing for all and we champion this within school.

We work to share practice and provide a wealth of training and development opportunities. The school is well resourced and there is excellent access to technology and support staff to assist with this.

The curriculum is broad and balanced and core subjects are a key focus. However, it goes wider than this by providing children with enriched opportunities in sport, the arts and life experiences. They develop strong friendships; learn about relationships, challenges and commitment to learning and life. The curriculum goes beyond our locality and we work to develop our children’s social conscience, their understanding and appreciation of difference and diversity and their awareness of the world around them, including their responsibility within this. Our outdoor areas allow children to experience the curriculum through practical learning and exploration.

Our passion and vision is to change lives through learning and prepare children for their future education and place in the world.
