About Ss John Fisher and Thomas More Catholic Primary School

Our Mission Statement

Our Mission here at SS John Fisher and Thomas More is to value the uniqueness of every person in our Catholic Christian Community. Realising that each individual is created in God’s likeness.

While striving for excellence we accept the children as they are and seek to teach them all the Gospel values with Jesus at the centre of all our lives. Prayer frames each of our days and strengthens us to fulfil our purpose as educators.

We acknowledge our parents/carers as the first educators and appreciate their support and involvement in school life. Daily, we seek to provide opportunities and rich learning experiences to further the development of the whole child.

We celebrate the children’s achievements, strive to realise their hopes, encourage them to reach their goals and dream of whom they may become.

Headteacher’s Welcome

St John’s has almost been completely refurbished and extensive improvements have taken place both within and outside of the school. The external grounds have won a prestigious national award and include a beautiful prayer garden, a magnificent amphitheatre, trim trail and sports area. We also have excellent nursery provision for children from two years old in our brand new nursery building.

The school’s motto is: “Journeying together with Jesus Christ, we learn to love and love to learn.”

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children achieve their full potential academically, spiritually and personally. We aim to develop good global citizens in a modern and world class system – children that are prepared for success in life. The school aims to ignite children’s love of learning through opportunities to excite, enrich and explore!

At Ss John Fisher & Thomas More, we work within a Catholic ethos to create an inclusive learning culture, where children are challenged in their thinking, strive for continuous improvement and are committed to lifelong learning.

We follow the English National Curriculum which aims to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum allowing access to all pupils at their appropriate level. Every effort is made to make learning enjoyable, worthwhile and ensure the school provides stimulating experiences that employ a variety of teaching strategies. English (Reading; Writing; Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling) & Maths are taught discretely in small sized teaching groups which carefully match pupils’ learning needs. The other core subject of RE is also taught discretely using the Shrewsbury diocese approved scheme ‘The Way, the Truth & the Life’. There will also be a daily act of collective worship in accordance with statutory requirements.

The knowledge and skills in other subjects are taught sequentially in units across a two year cycle. Each topic / theme links closely to core texts for each year group. This is because we believe that reading and the development of language needs to be at the heart of our curriculum design.

The curriculum is then enriched through a range of external visitors (including artists and sports coaches), trips and visits and other ‘wow’ moments which help to bring each topic alive for the children.

St John’s is a vibrant school, which has been acclaimed for its award winning choir and its achievements in gardening, drama, sport and inclusion. A warm welcome always awaits you!

WHY WORK WITH US?

The Corpus Christi Catholic Academy Trust is committed to providing everyone who works for us with opportunities for professional growth, open and collaborative communication and to work in a vibrant and welcoming environment with wonderful students, supportive staff, governors and parents. All of our schools work closely together to share ideas and to ensure all staff have the opportunity to enhance and develop their career.

WHAT WE OFFER OUR EMPLOYEES

CPD

We are committed to providing Continuing Professional Development and give all staff the opportunity to gain further qualifications. Teaching Staff are encouraged to undertake NPQML/NPQSL qualifications. CPD also extends to our Support Staff and recently a number of Teaching Assistants across the Trust have started either an Early Years Educator Level 3 Apprenticeship or a Teaching Apprenticeship which enables them to gain a PGCE with QTS. We also have a library of short eLearning courses and fully accredited qualifications that all of our employees can access which are self-paced, enabling you to access training at times that suit you and at your own speed.

Opportunities for Career Progression

All vacancies in any of our schools are advertised across the whole Trust, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience working in a new environment which can result in promotion, personal development and professional growth. Collaboration We work collaboratively with our family of schools, the Diocese of Shrewsbury and the wider community. This has included delivering school-to-school support to schools in difficulty. This work gives staff opportunities to develop their CVs whilst ensuring we fulfil our Catholic mission by providing a service to society and working in partnership with others.

Support Staff Appraisal

We have adopted an open, honest and supportive system to ensure all support staff are regularly appraised, have access to appropriate training and support and have the opportunity to express an interest in developing their career.

Confidential Support

Staff and their immediate families have access to an Employee Assistance Programme which is a free 24-hour helpline and online Health Portal which gives access to qualified and experienced counsellors. We recognise that balancing the pressures of work with the needs of a home life can sometimes be challenging. Our Employee Assistance Programme can provide advice and support on a range of issues including: family, debt management and lifestyle.

Supporting your Well-Being

We are committed to supporting the well-being of all our staff and have recently introduced a Health Cash Plan. Staff can access a range of benefits which includes covering the costs towards optical, dental, alternative therapy treatments and health screening. The scheme also gives you access to discounted gym memberships. We also offer the opportunity to receive a flu vaccination each year and a range of free refreshments are also made available across our Schools.

Eyecare Voucher Scheme

If as part of your role, you use a PC or laptop daily for more than an hour and have decided to opt out of the Health Cash Plan, you will be able to request a voucher to pay for an eye test. Should you then be prescribed VDU glasses, we contribute towards the cost of those glasses.

Generous Pension Scheme

Automatic enrolment into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme with 23.68% employer contributions, or to the Local Government Pension Scheme for Support Staff (one of the most competitive on the market, with employer contributions of above 20% in most cases).

Development Plans

This is an exciting time in our journey, and we are constantly seeking to grow and develop our offering to staff. Work is underway to extend training opportunities and the employee benefits we provide.

Terms and Conditions

We are committed to following nationally agreed terms and conditions of pay for both Teachers and Support Staff on an on-going basis
