About Oulton Academy
Oulton Academy is an Ofsted-rated Outstanding school in a close-knit South Leeds village, and we’re proud to have been on a rapid and remarkable journey of transformation in recent years. Once an underachieving local authority school, Oulton is now achieving results and recognition to be proud of – thanks to the energy, ambition, and unwavering commitment of our staff, students, and wider community.
Our Outstanding judgement, awarded in March 2024, reflects a school culture rooted in respect, resilience, and motivation. Students are now achieving the best GCSE results in over 20 years, but our focus goes far beyond grades. We are passionate about nurturing confident, compassionate young people who are fully equipped for life beyond the classroom.
Our transformation has been shaped by exceptional leadership. John Higgins, our Head of School, has led the school with vision and purpose—raising attainment to above the national average, restoring pride in the community, and making Oulton the first-choice school for local families. In 2025, John was highly commended at the TES Teaching Awards, earning national recognition for his transformational leadership and tireless commitment to raising aspirations.
