About Orion Academy

Welcome from the Co Headteachers

Orion Academy was established in February 2020 and we feel very privileged to be leading a new school at the start of a very exciting journey, along with our fantastic staff and students.

We moved into our new school in September 2021: a state of the art building which will enable us to build our school community from 60 to 108 students in time and also become co-educational. The opportunities which the new school will offer are endless. We enjoy purpose-built therapeutic spaces and vocational spaces, as well a new music studio, gym, sports hall.

We believe that positive and healthy relationships are fundamental in ensuring that all students can thrive within our community. All our class sizes are small and led by a team of dedicated staff who work alongside the students all week. This ensures that there is a continuity of approach and opportunities for deep relationships are formed.

Our school community works within the principles of, ‘Ready, Respectful and Safe’ and the students and staff work within restorative practices.

All our students have Education, Health and Care plans with a range of needs, but most significantly we work with those who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and other associated difficulties.

We believe that each student should be treated as an individual and we enjoy forming positive relationships with parents and carers to help us to understand each child and to be able to forge individual pathways to ensure the best outcomes.

We take our responsibilities as educators very seriously and aim to develop responsible and well-rounded citizens of the future.

Thank you for your interest in our school. Please do get in touch if you would like further information.

Aims and Values

At Orion Academy we believe our young people are unique individuals and as such we have designed our school curriculum with their learning and Special Educational Needs at the heart of all we do. Our nurturing approach seeks to extend our work into the community; actively supporting, listening and engaging with our families and carers to deliver the best possible environment for our children and young people, thus enabling them to learn effectively and become active and responsible citizens who are well prepared for life after school.

We are committed to delivering this through:
  • A focus on personal development
  • Differentiated approaches based on individual needs
  • A school-wide family ethos centred on values of empathy, acceptance and mutual respect
  • A focus on celebration and recognition of success
  • A commitment to working in partnership with our parents, carers and wider agencies
  • A commitment to help our young people make sense of the changing world and the importance of diversity and equality
