About Our School 

Joseph Norton Academy is a highly regarded, specialised setting dedicated to supporting pupils across Key Stages 2, 3, and 4 who present with complex Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We know that traditional schools haven't always worked for our pupils, sometimes making them feel unsafe or like they have failed. This is where our staff step in and help to change their outlook on education.

Our Vision: Nurture, Safety, and Progress Our vision is to be a widely recognised school for nurture based education, operating on the principle that learning cannot occur without emotional security. We maintain a focus on:

• Safety: Establishing a predictable, and physically/emotionally safe environment that actively works on regulating emotions and calming the nervous system.

• Enjoyment: Delivering a hands on, accessible curriculum enhanced by unique facilities like our school farm, to help rebuild a positive association with education.

• Pupil Progress: Tracking holistic, developmental, and emotional milestones alongside academic growth, ensuring every breakthrough is celebrated.

Our Mission: Readiness for Life 

Our mission is to ensure that every pupil leaves our school with the self regulation skills, emotional resilience, and core understanding required to navigate life after school, further education, or employment. Guided by attachment theory and social pedagogy, we treat all behavior as communication. Our goal is to provide daily access to emotionally available adults who use therapeutic, restorative language to repair relational trust, helping pupils transition into healthy, independent futures.

We live by four simple values, and we expect our staff to model them every day:

• Respect: We treat every child with kindness, no matter how tough their day has been. We separate the child from their behavior.

• Perseverance: We never give up. When things get difficult or a pupil has a bad day, we dust ourselves off and start fresh the next morning.

• Cooperation: We work as a team. We support each other, share the load, and teach our pupils how to get along and work with others.

• Responsibility: We help our pupils take ownership of their choices, care for their school environment, and understand how their actions affect the people around them.
