Thank you for your interest in working at Furze Down School, a Specialist School for Communication and Interaction.
About Our School
Located in Winslow, a charming market town in North Buckinghamshire, Furze Down is a Local Authority maintained special educational needs school serving pupils aged 3-19 years. All our pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outlining their Special Educational Needs, with primary needs predominantly within the broad category of Speech, Language and Communication.
Our school values of personal responsibility and respect have created an ethos where views, beliefs and differences are appreciated and given voice. This commitment to excellence has been consistently recognised by Ofsted, with 'Outstanding' ratings in 2006, 2009, 2014, 2018 and 2024.
Our Facilities and Vision
Following Local Authority approval in June 2011, we completed a comprehensive school rebuild that has transformed our learning environment. This investment created modern facilities providing pupils with a seamless learning journey, building experiences, skills, knowledge and understanding as they progress. Our ambitious plans for the future are now supported by an exciting and aspirational environment that empowers children and young people to develop resilience and determination for 21st Century challenges and opportunities.
Our Approach to Education
Furze Down takes pride in our innovative multidisciplinary team, extensive site and excellent facilities, ensuring pupils receive the best possible education and care. Our bespoke inclusive curriculum provides relevant learning for all pupils, enabling teachers to recognise strengths, set suitable challenges, respond to diverse needs and overcome individual and group learning barriers.
We foster a culture of shared and creative problem-solving, continuously interrogating classroom practice and learning from collective experience to improve pupil outcomes. Our Teachers, Therapists and Learning Support Assistants work collaboratively to identify and understand pupils' specific learning barriers - not simply at the global SEND level, but for particular tasks and concepts. Interventions to address barriers and scaffold learning are both planned in advance and implemented dynamically in response to pupils' progress within lessons.
Professional Development and Support
Our research-informed practices are developed through effective professional learning opportunities. Staff are adaptive and flexible, ready to reinterpret or reframe learning while monitoring pupils' experiences. We provide high-quality Continuing Professional Development to help you pursue personal goals, alongside accredited training programmes and ongoing learning opportunities. Internal promotion pathways are also available.
