Coombe Dean School

About Coombe Dean School

As a school our ethos is centred around the key values of Community, Integrity and Opportunity, and we work hard to ensure that these values permeate through every aspect of school life.
It is my privilege to have been Headteacher at Coombe Dean since September 2020.  Staff in all roles at the school work tirelessly to support our pupils to reach their full potential through all aspects of the curriculum, in and beyond the classroom. This can be achieved through academic rigour, creative expression or sporting success, and each strand is supported and valued by pupils and staff alike.
Coombe Dean educates pupils from across Plymstock, a suburb of Plymouth, as well as from surrounding villages and from the wider Plymouth area, creating a rich and diverse tapestry in a school that is inclusive. The location of the school is idyllically set on the edge of woodland, two miles from the sea and there are large spaces for pupils to explore, grow in and learn in.
Coombe Dean is an ambitious school which sets high expectations of its staff and pupils alike, challenging and supporting everyone to be the best that they can be so that, together, we can achieve our aspirations. We encourage all of our pupils to be enterprising and to take up leadership and enrichment opportunities throughout their time at school. We want to prepare our pupils for active leadership roles in the community as well as the workplace, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life and providing them with access to knowledge that enables them to pursue their academic interests as well as unlocking future opportunities as adults who can understand, cooperate and shape the world.
The academic success of our pupils at GCSE and A level means that our pupils have opportunities to follow their chosen courses at university, college, or to pursue training and employment locally, nationally and internationally.
Literacy and Curriculum has been at the heart of the school’s focus for the last two years. We believe curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences that we, as a school, plan and provide for our pupils.  Our vision is to deliver a curriculum that excites pupils and helps them to see the world in new ways, beyond the sometimes-limiting confines of their own experience. Our curriculum introduces pupils to the best that has been thought, said and created and promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils.
At Coombe Dean we believe that literacy is the ability to think, talk, listen, read and write in order to communicate effectively. It is also an essential aspect for learners to facilitate access to learning across the curriculum.  Being literate is key to academic success and is therefore central to a young person’s life chances and a key responsibility of any school.  Literacy is not just a range of general skills; instead it must be grounded in the specifics of each subject.  Every teacher therefore opens their subject to learners through academic language and through various reading and writing strategies which unlock the subject-specific curriculum.  Reading, writing, speaking and listening are at the heart of knowing more and remembering more about science, art, history and every other subject at Coombe Dean.  There is expert teaching of literacy, vocabulary and reading in every classroom; literacy expertise is what unlocks the potential of the curriculum.
As a school, we have much to be proud of.  We work hard at fostering positive relationships with pupils and families alike and this supports a safe and calm learning environment for our pupils. We value the consistency and transparency of a very simple behaviour system that is built around mutual respect and learning how to get things right rather than being told what you have done wrong. The strong pastoral provision supports our pupils throughout their education journey, starting from transition from primary school and through to employment, further education and training.
