Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology (CAST) is a University Technical College (UTC), supported by the Baker Dearing Trust. As a UTC, we combine traditional academic subjects with technical and practical learning, preparing pupils for high-demand careers in science and technology.
We are an inspiring, specialist science academy for young people aged 13-19. We equip our pupils with the ‘powerful knowledge’ they need to succeed in life, alongside the character to become resilient in overcoming obstacles, to manage themselves responsibly, to work independently on challenging tasks, and to collaborate effectively with others.
We offer GCSE, A level and T Level courses, alongside unique opportunities to learn from working scientists, technologists and engineers.
Pupils work in state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, with learning delivered in innovative and engaging ways, supported by our unique partnerships with businesses. As a result, CAST provides pupils with a headstart in their future careers. Pupil outcomes are strong: for example, in 2025, Attainment 8 was 56, and pupils achieved well above national averages in STEM subjects.
We instil a workplace ethos, recognised positively in our Ofsted inspection, which stated that ‘the excellent behaviour of students in lessons and around college creates an environment in which it is a joy to teach and study.’
Staff feedback demonstrates that CAST is a strong community in which to work, with a supportive and collaborative culture that is highly valued. Staff benefit from eight dedicated training and marking days built into the academic year, alongside a wide variety of internal and external development opportunities.
The school is part of United Learning’s cluster in Cambridge, working closely with neighbouring schools Coleridge Community College, Parkside Community College, The Galfrid School and Trumpington Community College. This collaboration allows us to share expertise, access to joint services, and enrich the educational experience for all.
For staff, this approach helps to streamline processes and manage workloads effectively, supporting excellent outcomes while promoting a healthy work-life balance, allowing us to support and invest in our staff more effectively.
We are situated in the heart of Cambridge’s world-renowned Biomedical Campus. Our state-of-the-art building opened in 2014, providing an exceptional environment for teaching and learning. A sense of space is central to Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology; the environment is free from crowding and clutter, with dedicated areas for social time, independent study, small group work as well as classrooms, laboratories and a lecture theatre.
Our independent learning spaces provide a flexible, hot-desking environment, encouraging sixth form pupils to develop professional working practices by planning their time and moving effectively between independent study, lessons, practical work and social time.
Our contemporary dining area, ‘The Strand’, is very popular and serves snacks and hot meals. Used by both pupils and staff, the atmosphere is lively and sociable.
Interactive projectors are installed throughout learning areas, and our lecture theatre features an impressive video wall, making it one of the largest lecture spaces in Cambridge.
What our staff say about working at CAST:
‘During my time at CAST I have been surrounded by a fantastic team of staff who are passionate about their work and dedicated to providing the best service they can to students, teachers and families. CAST is a great place to work with a brilliant team ethic with all staff working together and supporting each other.’
Sue, Support Staff 2025
‘The working environment at CAST is very supportive, both helping the students to shine, but also the staff to show what they are capable of. The buddy programme for new staff made me feel part of the school community and my buddy was always ready to point me in the right direction to find the answers needed.’
Margarita, Teacher 2025
