Auckland College was founded by Anthony and Gillian Akaraonye in 1999 at the current site in Aigburth in Liverpool. Gillian was a highly respected teacher with many years’ experience in mainstream education; Anthony Akaraonye held the post as Head of Children’s services in Liverpool City Region and had over 25 years’ experience of children and family services.

The Auckland College story started in 1991 when Anthony and Gillian established Park View Tuition Centre. The success of the Tuition Centre convinced Anthony and Gillian to concentrate on the further development of the concept. Gillian left her fulltime job as a respected teacher and moved the centre to the Welsh Chapel in the Allerton area of Liverpool. With support from the local community, she was soon helping up to 700 children per week with after-school and weekend tuition support.

It was during this time that the name Auckland College was born. In 1995, one of the school’s pupils suggests the name to reflect the Welsh Chapel’s location on Auckland Road and by 1996 Auckland College was established and registered with Ofsted. Drawing inspiration from its own pupils is still important to Auckland College. The school moved to its current site in Aigburth in 1999. The building had earlier been a nursing home and needed a complete renovation to transform it into what it appears like today. After a year of hard work, the school opened in September 1999 and took 120 full time pupils on the new site.

Auckland College has always been driven by a clear mission: to provide a safe, happy and achieving school where every pupil can thrive. Guided by our motto Carpe Diem - Seize the day and our belief that every pupil matters and every moment counts, we continue to build on this foundation. What began as our core vision remains at the heart of the school today, and we are committed to developing it further as we help each pupil grow in confidence, curiosity and ambition.
