What is a Governor?
If you’ve never worked in a school, the term "Governor" might sound formal, but the role is essentially about being a "strategic leader" .
Strategic, Not Operational:
You aren't there to manage the school day-to-day, that's the Headteacher's job. Your role is a "thinking and questioning" one, focusing on the big picture.
A "Critical Friend":
You provide a balance of support and challenge for the school leadership, acting as a sounding board to help the school improve.
Team Effort:
You act as part of a "corporate body". This means all decisions and responsibilities are shared as a team; you are never expected to act or lead alone.
Valued Perspectives:
You don't need to be an education expert. Schools thrive when they have a board with diverse skills in areas like problem-solving, communication, and listening.
