About this Role

Learning Support Mentor

Newton Wood Barn School

Reports to: Headteacher

This is more than a job — it is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with additional needs.

Newton Wood Barn School is seeking a compassionate, resilient and emotionally intelligent Learning Support Mentor to join our skilled and reflective team. You will support pupils aged 8–14 with social, emotional and additional learning needs, providing consistent, relational and structured support to help them engage in learning and work towards their EHCP outcomes.

About Us

Newton Wood Barn School sits within the wider provision of Empshott LLP, a joint venture between Alice Anstee and the Rotherfield Park Estate.

Our ethos is connection, community, creativity. We place relationships at the heart of learning, embrace outdoor and green-space education, and foster wellbeing through inclusive and sustainable practices.

The Role

As a Learning Support Mentor, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support (2–6 pupils)
  • Use relational and trauma-informed approaches to support emotional regulation
  • Assist with literacy, numeracy, life skills and vocational learning
  • Support outdoor and hands-on learning (including working around animals where appropriate)
  • Contribute to safeguarding, record-keeping and professional discussions
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists and families
  • Support pupils during transitions, off-site activities and unstructured times

Every day is different. Flexibility, patience and a calm, boundaried approach are essential.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

  • Is committed to relational, child-centred practice
  • Can build strong, professional relationships
  • Demonstrates resilience and emotional intelligence
  • Maintains high safeguarding standards
  • Believes in empowering young people to realise their potential

Safeguarding

Newton Wood Barn School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

If you are passionate about creating safe spaces where young people feel accepted, understood and capable of growth, we would love to hear from you.
