About this Role

Shape the Future: Become a School Governor

Are you interested in improving children’s education and giving back to your local community?

Wellspring Academy Trust is a growing community of 33 individual, unique, highly effective schools, all united in one purpose - to make a difference.

We deliver change and improve lives for children, young people and communities across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. We believe in social equity and work to ensure that every young person in our care, regardless of their background or daily challenges, has access to a high quality education in a warm and supportive environment.

We are currently looking for new Local Governors to help shape the future in our areas of operation - could this be you?

Governors are absolutely critical to the success of our schools and play an important role in ensuring that we deliver on our aims to provide the very best education possible for all young people in our care.

Being a Governor can be a hugely rewarding role and an opportunity to employ your existing expertise or community knowledge in a highly valuable way whilst learning new skills and knowledge and widening your professional network.

What Does a Governor Do?

The Governing Body works together as a collective  to:

Set the strategic vision and values for the school

Hold the Principal to account for educational standards and staffing performance

Oversee the school’s financial health, ensuring good value for public money; and

Engage with the local community and stakeholders to build support.

What Is The Commitment?

All of our Local Governing Bodies meet five times each academic year for approximately two hours. Meetings are held at our school sites, with the flexibility to join online also.  You will need to set aside some time to read meeting papers beforehand, and you will be invited to take part in strategic monitoring visits and school events throughout the year. The time commitment varies from month to month, but is on average less than five hours per month.

What Skills and Qualities are we looking for?

If you are over 18 and have a little spare time, you could become a School Governor.

We welcome applications from individuals with professional skills in areas such as HR, finance, law, public relations, data analysis, strategic planning or education, but equally we seek people who:

       Embody strong ethics and values,

Are passionate about innovative approaches to education,

Believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed,

Are willing to learn new skills.

No prior experience in education is necessary; we value diverse perspectives and welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

How Being A Governor Will Benefit You

Being a Governor provides a unique opportunity to make a positive social impact while aiding your own personal and professional development:

Leadership: Development of strategic leadership skills.

       Networking: Expansion of professional networks.

Skills: Building of governance, compliance, and financial acumen.

Growth: Personal growth and building of confidence.
