About this Role

Refocus School is an independent alternative provision based in Wellingborough, we are an Ofsted rated Good school and pride ourselves in providing quality education for those hard to reach students. We are looking for a new Deputy Centre Manager to join the Refocus family. 

The Deputy Centre Manager will play a key role in ensuring the smooth day‑to‑day running of their site. This role combines leadership, pastoral oversight, behaviour management and tutoring for small groups of up to seven students aged 14–16. Our students require a more personalised, supportive, and flexible learning environment. The postholder supports the Centre Manager in driving high standards of behaviour, safeguarding, curriculum delivery, and student outcomes. 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges, or in alternative education.

  • Strong behaviour management and de‑escalation skills.

  • Ability to teach small groups effectively across a range of subjects (or a specialist subject with flexibility). / willingness to learn and gain qualifications.

  • Excellent communication, relationship‑building, and teamwork skills.

  • Understanding of safeguarding, child protection, and statutory responsibilities.

  • Resilience, emotional intelligence, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.


Desirable

  • Experience in a leadership or middle‑leadership role.

  • Teaching qualification (QTS, QTLS, or equivalent), though some APs accept unqualified teachers with strong experience.

  • Training in trauma‑informed practice, restorative approaches, or SEMH interventions.

  • Experience working with multi‑agency partners.

Additional Information

  • This role requires adaptability, creativity, and a commitment to improving life chances for vulnerable young people.

  • The Deputy Centre Manager will often be a key adult for students, providing stability, boundaries, and encouragement.

  • Some off‑site work, home visits, or community‑based learning may be required.
