About this Role

RLT has some of the most powerful analytics tools based on the combination of Bromcom and Google suite.  With an ever increasing need for reliable and timely data, we have begun our journey onto using a database.  The person appointed will be part of a forward looking team that works with industry leaders across the country.

Initially for a fixed term period of 2 years to support the delivery of key projects, the Data Engineer will add capacity as a key contributor to the Trust's data engineering function. The post holder will work collaborating with the Data Director to ensure smooth, accurate data flows to support operational and strategic decision-making.

This role requires the individual to design, develop and maintain automated data pipelines, which are currently primarily using Google Sheets and BigQuery. The post holder will help translate the Data Director's strategic vision into reliable systems, which may lead to current resources being developed into a web app format.

A Level 5 Apprenticeship is available for this role.

This encompasses assisting in the development of databases, writing and testing automation and data-processing scripts (e.g. in Python or Google Apps Script), and building robust internal tools for quick, accurate data access (focusing on integration with Sheets and Looker dashboards). A critical part of this role involves maintaining and optimizing existing Google Sheets dashboards, alongside performing ad-hoc data analysis to provide direct, timely support for the central team's needs.

This role is designed to build deep technical proficiency in scripting, data analysis and data engineering while ensuring robust documentation and knowledge sharing for team resilience. The post holder is expected to work with increasing independence as their skills develop.

We’d love to employ somebody with degree level experience that relates to this role, who has applied their knowledge in real life situations.

This role is offered for 30 - 37 hours per week and the working weeks are flexible. Term time only, term time plus and all year round options will be considered for the right candidate.

This is an exciting time to join RLT as we progress from our current base of interconnected sheets and Big Query, to a sustainable and scalable platform.  You’ll be well supported within the central team, and have many opportunities to liaise with industry experts working in education and data across the UK.

Education has the power to change lives, communities and society for the better. At RLT we believe that we can achieve more for our pupils, trainees, staff and communities by working together rather than alone. Schools in RLT are united by a common belief in the benefits of working together, and by our commitment to shared principles.

OUR VISION is for our schools and SCITT to improve rapidly, continuously and sustainably: to be better faster together.

OUR ‘WHY?’ is that children and young people ‘only get one go’ in school and therefore as part of RLT we aim to ensure the best possible ‘go’ for our pupils.

OUR ‘HOW?’ is through the highest support and challenge for our schools and each other, underpinned by our principles.

Our employees benefit from a wide variety of support including extensive  continuing professional learning and development opportunities, wellbeing and staff networks and access to Defined Benefit Pension Schemes (TPS and LGPS) for all staff. For more information on what it is like to work for the Trust, and the benefits you could access, please see our “Working in RLT” guide.

This role includes regulated activity relevant to children.

We reserve the right to consider and interview candidates ahead of the closing date if appropriate. An offer may be made to an exceptional candidate in this instance.

If you would like to have a confidential conversation with our Data Director, about the role, prior to application, then please email mhancock@riverlearningtrust.org  to arrange a call.

Please note that any messages sent via MNT will not be monitored between 22nd December 2005 and 02 January 2026
