About this Role

Horticulture and Sustainability Lead

Help Children and Young People Grow, Thrive and Build a Greener Future

The Bower Learning Partnership is seeking a passionate, creative and community-minded Horticulture and Sustainability Lead to develop and lead exciting horticultural, environmental and sustainability opportunities across Polden Bower School and Avalon School. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine outdoor learning, sustainability leadership and community engagement whilst helping children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) develop confidence, independence and valuable life skills.

Flexible Working Opportunities

We welcome applications from candidates seeking either:

  • A part-time post at Polden Bower School (22.2 hours per week)
  • A part-time post at Avalon School (14.8 hours per week)
  • A full-time position working across both schools (5 days per week)

We believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom. Through gardening, growing, environmental projects and community partnerships, you will inspire pupils to connect with nature, develop practical skills and prepare for adulthood through real-life experiences.

This is far more than a horticulture role. As our Sustainability Lead and Green Champion, you will help shape and deliver our Climate Action Plans, promote environmental responsibility across our schools and create opportunities for pupils to develop valuable green skills for the future.

Whether developing school allotments, creating outdoor learning environments, building relationships with local community groups, or leading projects that enhance biodiversity and sustainability, you will play a key role in helping our pupils learn, grow and flourish.

What the Role Involves

  • Leading and developing horticultural provision across our school sites
  • Supporting pupils to engage in gardening, growing, food production and environmental projects
  • Creating meaningful opportunities linked to Education for Life and Preparation for Adulthood
  • Developing partnerships with local allotments, community organisations and environmental groups
  • Acting as the school's Sustainability Lead and Green Champion
  • Supporting the delivery of Climate Action Plans and sustainability initiatives
  • Promoting biodiversity, outdoor learning and environmental stewardship
  • Helping pupils develop independence, confidence, communication and employability skills
  • Celebrating pupil achievement and strengthening community engagement

We're Looking for Someone Who:

  • Has a genuine passion for horticulture, sustainability and outdoor learning
  • Can inspire and engage children and young people
  • Enjoys developing practical, hands-on learning experiences
  • Has excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Values inclusion, community engagement and environmental responsibility
  • Is organised, proactive and able to manage a range of projects
  • Shares our commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people with SEND

Why Join Us?

At the Bower Learning Partnership, we are committed to creating exceptional opportunities for children and young people with SEND. This role offers the chance to make a lasting impact through outdoor learning, sustainability and community engagement, helping pupils develop the skills, confidence and experiences they need for adult life.

If you are passionate about horticulture, sustainability, environmental education and making a real difference to the lives of children and young people, we would love to hear from you.

Safeguarding Statement

Polden Bower School and the wider Bower Learning Partnership are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment. This appointment will be subject to appropriate safeguarding checks, including an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, satisfactory references, medical clearance, online checks and proof of the right to work in the UK
