About the Role
We are seeking an exceptional individual to take on the role of Chair of Trustees, providing strategic leadership and governance across our trust.
This is a key leadership position, offering the opportunity to shape the direction of a values-driven organisation committed to delivering high-quality education and improving outcomes for all pupils.
As Chair, you will lead the Board of Trustees, working closely with the Executive Headteacher, Headteachers, and Local Governing Bodies (LGBs) to ensure strong governance, accountability, and continuous improvement across the trust.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
• Provide clear leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring a shared vision, mission, and strategic priorities
• Support and challenge senior leaders to drive high standards of educational performance
• Ensure all board decisions align with the long-term strategic direction of the trust
• Promote a strong, collaborative culture across trustees, LGBs, and school leaders
Governance & Accountability
• Lead the board in holding executive leaders to account for educational outcomes, staff performance, and organisational effectiveness
• Ensure compliance with statutory responsibilities and governance best practice, including the DfE Governance Handbook
• Oversee the financial performance of the trust and ensure effective use of resources
• Work closely with the Governance Professional to ensure effective, compliant board operations
Board Leadership
• Chair and facilitate effective board meetings, ensuring all voices are heard and decisions are well-informed
• Develop a high-performing board with the right balance of skills, experience, and diversity
• Lead board self-evaluation, performance review, and continuous development
• Foster a culture of openness, accountability, and constructive challenge
Partnership & External Relations
• Act as an ambassador for the trust, representing it in external meetings and events
• Build strong relationships with stakeholders including schools, parents, partners, and the wider community
• Support collaboration across the trust and with external organisations
Working with the Executive Headteacher
• Establish a strong, professional relationship with the Executive Headteacher, providing both support and appropriate challenge
• Lead the Executive Headteacher's performance management and appraisal process
• Maintain regular communication to ensure effective oversight of trust operations
