Why join us?
Lakeview School in Wixams is looking for a dedicated Co-opted Governor to join our friendly and supportive Local Governing Board (LGB).
At our school, every child is seen, heard, and valued. Our staff and governors work hand-in-hand to ensure students don’t just reach their full potential; they enjoy the journey getting there. Our core values of respect, integrity, honesty, and compassion aren't just words on a wall; they are the heartbeat of our curriculum and the foundation of our community, both inside and outside the classroom.
As part of the Pioneer Learning Trust, a group of seven primary schools across Luton and Bedford, you will be part of a network committed to the pursuit of excellence and equity. Each school within the multi-academy has its own local governing body (LGB). The legal accountability for the school lies with the Trust Board and the LGB has a critical role to play in being the ‘eyes and ears’ of the Trust Board, at individual school level.
Being a governor can be extremely rewarding and will provide you with the opportunity to meet new people and gain new skills.
The Role of a Co-opted Governor
The LGB provides challenge and support to the school to ensure the best possible outcomes for all pupils. As a Governor, you would not get involved in the day-to-day operation or management of the school, you will be responsible for developing the school's vision and strategy, and ensuring that the ethos of the school is upheld.
Who are we looking for?
Don’t worry if you have no prior experience in education or governance. We provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to help you feel confident in the role. What matters most to us is your unique perspective and professional insight. We value diverse viewpoints and are currently looking for individuals who can bring specialised expertise to our team and are particularly interested in applicants with a background in:
• Finance - to help us maintain robust oversight of our budgets, ensure financial sustainability and direct resources where they impact children most.
• Health & Safety - to provide guidance on maintaining a secure, compliant and thriving environment for our staff and children.
Most of all though, we are looking for individuals with:
• a commitment to ensuring the best educational outcomes for our children
• enthusiasm to making a positive contribution to our school community
• a willingness to engage with governor training opportunities
• the ability to ask inquisitive questions, hold leaders to account and work as part of a team
What is the time commitment of being a governor?
Meetings are held once every half term (i.e. 6 times a year), and usually take place at school in the early evening for approximately 2 hours. We recognise and value that governors are volunteers and will have other commitments outside of their governor role. However, we do ask that as a governor you are able to attend all LGB meetings and undertake a small amount of mandatory training (usually online).
Most governors also have a link governor role in an area such as Safeguarding, Inclusion or Behaviour and Attitudes. Through focused Governor visits to the school, approximately 1-3 times a year, you will support the school in your area of school development.
Governors are also very welcome, and warmly encouraged, to attend school events such as special assemblies and performances, to support the school and increase governor visibility to the whole school community.
How do I apply to become a governor?
