About this Role

  • Job Purpose: 
  •  Support the Head of Department in leading, developing and managing teachers, trainees and support staff within the department
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of high-quality teaching practices and the department’s enrichment offer
  • Assist in ensuring strong progress, high standards and excellent outcomes for all students

Strategic direction and development of Science 

  • Support the Head of Department in developing an appropriate curriculum, resources, and schemes of work that provide high-quality provision and excellent progress across all key stages
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental policies, plans, and practices that reflect the school’s priorities and commitment to high achievement and effective teaching and learning
  • Support monitoring of the impact of policies, plans and practices, recommending or taking further action when appropriate
  • Help create a positive climate in which staff feel confident, supported, and motivated in their teaching
  • Promote consistent understanding and application of departmental aims, policies, and practices to maintain a high-quality educational experience for all students

  • Support the Head of Department in shaping and communicating the strategic vision and direction of the department

Commitment to Learning:

  • Support the maintenance of disruption-free learning in all departmental classrooms
  • Uphold high expectations in corridors, including silence and punctuality routines
  • Enforce consistent use of the Commitment to Learning policy and support in monitoring its impact
  • Address low-level or persistent poor conduct within departmental lessons and implement effective interventions when required

Knowledge and Expertise:

  • Assist in ensuring centralised precision planning is available, up to date, and quality assured in line with whole-school priorities
  • Support the ongoing review and evaluation of the curriculum to ensure relevance, compliance, engagement and strong outcomes
  • Ensure meaningful home learning is regularly set, monitored and reviewed within the department
  • Support colleagues in developing strong curriculum and subject knowledge
  • Keep informed of DfE updates and subject-specific developments, sharing key information with the team

Teaching and Learning

  • Contribute to the monitoring of teaching, learning and the delivery of whole-school priorities across the department
  • Support staff in meeting the needs of all learners, including applying SEND expertise and ensuring appropriate adaptations
  • Assist in coordinating departmental enrichment including trips, visits, and extra-curricular opportunities

Staff Development  

  • Support the Head of Department in the management and development of teaching and support staff, including aspects of line management where delegated
  • Help organise and chair department meetings when required
  • Assist with induction, mentoring and training of new staff, including trainees and ECTs
  • Identify and promote suitable CPD/INSET opportunities
  • Contribute to developing a collaborative, effective departmental team culture

Resources, Budget, Stock & Ordering  

  • Support effective deployment of departmental resources.
  • Assist in managing and organising the learning environment
  • Contribute to annual departmental budget planning and completion of budget bids
  • Support the Head of Department in overseeing orders and monitoring expenditure where required

Pupil Progress

  • Use data to support improvements in student progress and experience
  • Assist in analysing KS3, GCSE and A Level data, helping to formulate strategies to raise achievement and address underperformance
  • Help oversee departmental assessments and ensure deadlines for reporting are met
  • Challenge and support staff to secure excellent pupil progress

Whole School Role  

  • Support positive communication with families through high-quality parent consultations and timely handling of subject-related concerns
  • Uphold whole-school standards and expectations consistently
  • Attend departmental and whole-school meetings as required, including deputising for the Head of Department where appropriate
  • Assist in maintaining accurate concept maps and department information on the school website
  • Support marketing of the subject at KS4 and KS5
  • Contribute to borough/Trust meetings, sharing and reflecting on best practice
  • Assist with updating departmental or whole-school documents as requested by SLT
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of whole-school policies
  • Support and monitor departmental implementation of whole-school initiatives
  • Communicate effectively with parents and governors when required
  • Contribute actively to the school’s enrichment and extra-curricular provision

  • Complete all appraisal requirements as set out in the school policy, including being appraised   
  • Strive to fulfil agreed appraisal objectives 
  • Challenge staff to aspire to greater goals and positive outcomes for pupils
