About the Role

South Wirral High School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head of English to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for an expert teacher of English to lead and inspire a faculty, driving forward the quality of teaching, curriculum development, and student outcomes. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the vision and culture of the faculty, ensuring alignment with the school’s mission and ethos.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for the faculty, ensuring a clear vision and strong culture that supports the school’s mission.
  • Lead on the intent, implementation, and impact of the curriculum, ensuring it meets the school’s high standards and supports all learners.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of curriculum impact, using quality assurance, internal assessments, and external examinations to drive improvements.
  • Oversee the professional development and appraisal of faculty staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • Ensure high standards of teaching and assessment, monitoring progress and implementing strategies to address gaps in learning.
  • Promote literacy across the curriculum and ensure ambitious expectations for all students, including disadvantaged and priority groups.
  • Maintain high standards of behaviour and conduct within the faculty, supporting staff with effective strategies and parental communication.
  • Cultivate a love of learning through high-quality extra-curricular activities and extended curriculum opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety policies and effective management of faculty resources and finances.

Requirements

  • Graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) / PGCE.
  • Proven experience of successful teaching, with evidence of adding value to student achievement at Key Stages 4 and 5.
  • Thorough knowledge of the curriculum and examination syllabus requirements in English.
  • Strong classroom practice, with the ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • Commitment to raising standards and achievement for all students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Proficiency in using ICT to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team effectively, with a focus on staff well-being and professional development.
