Purpose of the role
To support the Caretaker in ensuring the school premises and grounds are safe, secure, clean and well maintained, helping to provide a welcoming environment for pupils, staff and visitors. Working under the direction of the Caretaker, the postholder will assist with site security, routine maintenance, health and safety checks, the supervision of contractors, and practical support for school operations and events. The postholder will play an important role in ensuring the school environment supports the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Key Responsibilities
Assist with the security of the school premises, including opening and locking up the site, responding to alarms and acting as a keyholder.
Carry out routine maintenance and minor repair tasks under the direction of the Caretaker, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry and decorating jobs within competence.
Support the completion of regular health and safety checks (fire alarms, emergency lighting, water testing, playground equipment and similar) and help maintain accurate records.
Help keep the school site clean, safe and well presented, working alongside cleaning staff and contractors as required.
Undertake grounds maintenance, including tidiness, litter collection, basic gardening and seasonal tasks such as gritting pathways in icy conditions.
Monitor the condition of buildings, furniture and fittings and report any repair needs to the Caretaker.
Support school events and activities by setting up rooms, moving furniture and equipment, and providing logistical support.
Assist with the management of site resources such as heating, lighting, waste disposal and recycling in an efficient and sustainable way.
Support the supervision of contractors on site, ensuring safeguarding and health and safety procedures are followed.
Respond promptly to site-related requests from staff and escalate matters to the Caretaker where appropriate.
Promote safeguarding and adhere to school policies, including ensuring a safe environment for pupils with SEND.
Person Specification – Qualifications and Experience
Some practical experience of building maintenance, DIY or a trade (plumbing, electrics, carpentry, decorating) is desirable.
Willingness to undertake training relevant to the role (for example health and safety, safeguarding, first aid).
Full driving licence
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to carry out a range of basic repair and maintenance tasks to a good standard, or willingness to learn.
Good organisational skills, with the ability to follow instructions, prioritise tasks and work as part of a team.
Basic IT skills for record-keeping and communication (email, logging maintenance jobs, using compliance systems).
Awareness of health and safety and safeguarding requirements.
Good interpersonal and communication skills; able to work effectively with staff, contractors and visitors.
Adaptable, proactive and solution-focused approach.
Working Conditions and Additional Information
The role requires flexibility in working hours, including early mornings, evenings and occasional weekends to support school operations. The postholder may be required to undertake physical tasks, work at height and use equipment in line with health and safety guidance. The postholder will be expected to act as a keyholder and to be available for emergency call-outs.
