Position: Teaching Assistant (Employment Support Officer)

Hours: 32.5 hours per week, term time only + 5 INSET days. (Monday - Friday, 9am - 4pm)

Salary: The starting base salary for this position is anticipated to be a Grade 3, SCP 3 £24,796 (FTE), £18,651.67 (actual) subject to a final salary evaluation.

Purpose of the Post

To provide tailored support to  interns with special educational needs and/or disabilities to develop on the job work skills so that they can obtain paid employment.  The successful candidate will initially be based at Scunthorpe Hospital working directly with our interns to facilitate the transition from education to employment by delivering personalised coaching, developing work-related skills and securing appropriate paid employment.   This role can involve supervising the whole group or supporting individuals in the classroom or on job rotation around the hospital.

Key Areas

  • Establish good relationships with interns, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs 
  • Attend to students’ personal needs including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters
  • Supervise and support students ensuring their safety and access to learning 
  • Use specialist knowledge and experience to support students to learn in line with their individual targets
  • Provide feedback to interns  in relation to progress, achievement, behaviour and attendance
  • Encourage interns to interact and work cooperatively and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self reliance
  • Develop 1:1 mentoring relationships with students and provide appropriate support at times of crisis 

Support for the Internship Tutor

  • Work with the tutor  to establish a purposeful orderly and productive learning environment
  • Work with the tutor and other key staff at the host business in lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lesson plans and resources as appropriate to suit the individual needs of the learners.   
  • Monitor, evaluate and evidence pupils’ progress and provide accurate information and analysis when required.  
  • Promote and maintain health and safety through the pro-active management of student behaviour dealing promptly with incidents and issues in line with college and host business policies 
  • Establish constructive relationships with parents and carers, exchanging information sensitively and effectively in a range of matters including progress, behaviour and attendance 
  • Liaise with other professionals and services as appropriate
  • Provide general administrative support and assist with the development of a range of plans and monitoring systems 

Support for the Curriculum 

  • Support students to access the curriculum including, in particular, core skills and the Project Search curriculum
  • Implement agreed learning activities and programmes according to pupils’ needs 
  • Determine the need for, prepare and maintain equipment and resources
  • Monitor and arrange orderly and secure storage as supplied 
  • Operate and maintain everyday equipment in accordance with instructions, undertaking simple repairs and reporting damage

Support for the College

  • Contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the college 
  • Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other professionals to support the progress of students 
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop 
  • Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings and training as required 
  • Assist with the supervision of students on community visits and out of college activities
  • Supervise students at lunch and break times 
  • Be responsible for maintaining and updating records, information and data in line with college policies
