Anthony Gell School is a strong, inclusive 11–18 secondary school with a proud heritage and a clear moral purpose. Outcomes are secure. The culture is positive. Students are well known and supported to achieve.
We are now seeking a Headteacher to build on this strength and lead the school confidently into its next phase.
We are seeking a values-led leader with high emotional intelligence and a proven track record of school improvement. You will combine strategic clarity with warmth, decisiveness with empathy, and ambition with integrity.
You will:
Provide clear, strategic leadership grounded in strong educational judgement
Sustain and raise standards in behaviour, learning and achievement
Champion inclusion, safeguarding and wellbeing
Inspire and develop staff, building a calm and purposeful culture
Lead change thoughtfully, preserving what makes AGS distinctive
Build trust with students, families, governors and the wider community
This role is open to an experienced Headteacher or an ambitious Deputy Head ready for headship, with the credibility and capacity to lead at scale.
AGS is a fully inclusive, comprehensive secondary school of around 800 students, including a growing Sixth Form. It serves the Derbyshire Dales and attracts families from beyond its catchment because of its strong reputation.
Built on a heritage dating back to 1576, the school combines academic ambition with character, enrichment and community. Staff are proud of their school. Students feel safe, supported and aspirational.
Anthony Gell School is part of Embark Federation, where our shared purpose is Love Learning, Love Life. As Headteacher, you will lead your school with autonomy and identity, while contributing to a wider Trust committed to integrity, teamwork and success. You will be supported through induction, ongoing professional development and our ‘Me at My Best’ leadership conversations.
This is not a turnaround. It is a stewardship and growth opportunity.
You will:
Strengthen a school that is already in a good place
Sharpen curriculum and pedagogy to ensure consistently strong outcomes
Deepen inclusive practice so every young person thrives
Shape a culture that balances high standards with humanity
Develop future leaders within the school and across the Trust
Above all, you will shape the life chances of young people in a community that values its school.
Closing date: Thursday 9th April 2026, 9am
Assessment and interviews: 21–22 April 2026
Informal conversations are welcomed.
