About this Role

Overall purpose of the role:

As the Director of Learning for English, you will be required to meet the general requirements of this post, as specified in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.  In addition, you will be required to fulfil any reasonable expectations from the Headteacher/Trust. The post will require you to work in partnership with the English teaching staff, TLR holders, Senior Leadership Team, governors and Trust Director of English to ensure the continuous improvement of English across the school/Trust. 

Safeguarding requirements:

This post requires the post holder to work in settings with children and young adults. Any employment offer is therefore subject to the results of an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). People who may have contact with younger children (i.e. primary school age) are also required to complete a declaration about family or other members of their household. Applicants MUST complete the MAT’s standard application form to be considered, will be required to provide evidence of identity and qualifications and offers of employment will be subject to satisfactory references. For applicants who work or have recently worked in a school, one of the references must be from the Headteacher.

Key Outputs:

Leadership 

  1. Lead and support staff within the English department to promote and facilitate the delivery of excellent teaching and learning in English. 
  1. Improve students’ levels of progress and attainment in English. 
  1. Develop strategies for helping all students achieve the highest standards, helping to overcome disadvantage, disability, special needs or other potential barriers to success. 
  1. Coach and guide colleagues to improve the quality of teaching and learning in English. 
  1. Support high standards of student behaviour for learning and engagement. 
  1. Ensure students work in safe environment, taking responsibility for ensuring the risks are identified and managed well. 
  1. Support whole-school aims and the school’s senior leadership team in raising standards of teaching and learning and student outcomes. 
  1. Help develop, implement, monitor and evaluate development plans for the department. 
  1. Devise, implement, monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning in the English department and intervene to improve standards, narrowing the progress gap in English for different groups of students. 
  1. Agree clear, achievable outcomes with staff and/or students. 
  1. Help colleagues that you line manage to produce their own personal development plan. Review progress towards objectives consistently within the school’s framework for benchmarking. 
  1. Help track students’ progress, rewarding success and intervening to improve standards. 
  1. Identify best practice within the faculty and across the school and help to share it with others. 
  1. Contribute to the overall direction of the school by attending selected senior leadership team meetings and helping to devise and implement whole-school policies. 
  1. Maintain a visible presence around the school, supporting duty teams and others by insisting upon and helping to maintain high standards of student conduct in lessons and around the school. 
  1. Manage staff and resources, to secure the best possible outcomes in English for all students. 
  1. Monitor progress and evaluate impact against improvement plans, revising plans or taking other action to ensure success. 

  1. Plan, adapt and deliver an ambitious curriculum that meets the needs of all groups of students, developing the skills and knowledge students need to be successful in their adult lives, with an appreciation for English. 
  2. To respond flexibly to curriculum changes that may be required from time to time, including alterations to line management responsibilities within the scope and scale of this role.   
  3. Ensure that all students in the school are well-prepared for public examinations in English. 

 

Teaching: 

 Undertake the duties of a teacher, as described in the teachers’ pay and conditions document: 

  1. Plan and teach lessons to assigned classes, to teach within the context of the trust’s or school’s plans, curriculum and schemes of work.  
  1. Assess, monitor, record and report on the learning needs, progress and achievements of assigned students. 
  1. Participate in arrangements for preparing students for external examinations.  
  1. Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s or trust’s policies, practices and procedures in such a way as to support the trust’s / school’s values and vision.  
  1. Work with others on curriculum and/or pupil development to secure co-ordinated outcomes.  
  1. In exceptional circumstances, supervise and so far as practicable teach any students where the person timetabled to take the class is not available to do so.  
  1. Maintain good order and discipline among students.  
  1. Participate in arrangements for the appraisal and review of own performance. 
  1. Participate in arrangements for further training and professional development and, where appropriate, that of other teachers and support staff including induction.   
  1. Communicate with students, parents and carers.  
  1. Collaborate and work with colleagues and other relevant professionals within and beyond the school. 

  1. Undertake any other reasonable task associated with the role of Director of Learning for English, as determined by the Trust Director of English / Headteacher.

Dimensions:

  • Range of Teachers – approximately 80 within the Academy 
  • Range of Students approximately 1250

  • Number of direct reports up to 6 

Work/Business contacts:

Internal: All teachers and support staff to advise how effectively to support students to achieve their Personal Best.

 External: Parents/carers and Families, Examinations Boards.

Expertise in role required (At selection – Level 1):

•        Qualified Teacher Status

•        Degree or equivalent

•        Evidence of continuing professional development and a willingness to undertake  further development as appropriate

•        Able to teach to a high standard

•        Successful experience or the ability to teach subject at GCSE

•        Experience of developing department strategies and effective implementation

•        Experience of implementing whole school strategies

•        Able to view department goals in a whole school context

•        Able to develop strategies for engaging students, develop the curriculum and secure improvements

•        Able to analyse data with a view to developing strategies to improve performance

•        Able to monitor and evaluate impact of interventions and strategies

•        Detailed knowledge of current developments in subject area for all levels

•        Excellent communication skills

•        Excellent behaviour management skills

•        Commitment to the safeguarding of young people

•        Ability to coach others to improve leadership & teaching

•        A willingness to be fully involved in the wider life of the trust, including extra-curricular activities.

•        Good role model in terms of promoting the trust’s aims & values, together with professional standards for teachers and leaders.

•        Is willing to work flexibly within scope of overall hours, e.g. evening meetings.

Desirable 

  • ·         Knowledge of innovative teaching and learning strategies
  • Highly competent in ICT and the use of computers

Expertise in role – After initial and advanced development:

•        Evidence of monitoring and evaluating interventions and strategies

•        Evidence of data analysis and strategies used to improve performance
