About this Role

Teacher of Science (Maternity Cover)

Brandles Secondary SEMH School

We are seeking an enthusiastic and resilient Teacher of Science to join our dedicated team on a maternity cover basis. This is an exciting opportunity to teach science in a small, specialist SEMH secondary setting, where strong relationships, structure and high-quality teaching make a real difference to young people’s lives.

The role:
You will deliver engaging and well-structured science lessons to small classes of secondary-age pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. A key part of the role is the ability to plan and safely deliver practical science experiments, adapting activities to meet individual needs while maintaining high expectations and clear routines.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching science across KS3 and KS4 Combined Science double award.
  • Planning and delivering practical experiments with a strong focus on safety and risk assessment
  • Creating a calm, consistent and supportive learning environment
  • Using trauma-informed and restorative approaches to support behaviour and engagement
  • Working closely with support staff, SEND professionals and pastoral teams
  • Monitoring progress and adapting teaching to meet individual needs

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is a qualified teacher (QTS/QTLS) or an experienced unqualified teacher with relevant experience
  • Can confidently teach practical science in a specialist or alternative setting
  • Has experience of, or a strong interest in, working with pupils with SEMH needs
  • Is calm, flexible and solution-focused
  • Understands the importance of structure, routines and positive relationships
  • Has strong behaviour management skills and a commitment to safeguarding

We offer:

  • Small class sizes and high levels of support
  • A collaborative and experienced staff team
  • Opportunities for professional development in SEMH and trauma-informed practice
  • The chance to make a genuine impact on pupils who need it most

Safeguarding:
This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful candidate will be subject to enhanced DBS checks and satisfactory references
