Great Western Academy opened in brand new, state-of-the-art facilities in North Swindon in September 2018. It is situated in Tadpole Garden Village, a development that has been used as a geographical case study. The Academy is heavily oversubscribed in all years and has a thriving sixth form to match. Geography is one of the most popular GCSE option choices and this a trend that extends to our sixth form which includes groups of A-level Geography students in both years 12 and year 13.  

This role will provide the successful applicant with the chance to further develop and teach an exciting Geography curriculum in KS3 and KS4 as well as teaching A-level where suitable. You will be part of a dynamic Geography team within the Humanities faculty. 

The humanities faculty encompasses Geography, History, Philosophy and religion, sociology, psychology, government and politics, law and Criminology. All subjects have strong leadership in place to ensure that all staff are thoroughly supported. Staff in humanities work collaboratively to consistently share resources, reflect and improve daily practice so that the best possible outcomes for our students are achieved. The wellbeing of staff is at the heart of all departmental decisions.  As such, all resources are centrally shared with Schemes of Learning and a week-by-week teaching schedule to prevent any duplicate or excessive planning. Moreover, the department has a carefully considered assessment cycle that aims to make all assessments meaningful without being overly onerous. Our priority is very much to recruit the best classroom practitioners who can ensure our students arrive at the Academy excited about the day ahead and leave each day talking about the excellent learning they have experienced. To this end, staff have the freedom and creativity to develop lessons within GWA’s framework of Teaching and Learning and faculty expectations. Staff are not prescribed to deliver identically structured lessons. Whether you are an ECT or an experienced teacher, your input will be valued and integral to the department.   

The successful candidate will also have the chance to contribute once a week to our enrichment program which runs for students in years 7 and 8 from 3.10 to 4.15pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This provides opportunities to work with students in an area of your own interest to broaden and deepen their range of experiences at school or support and guide them in their self-study.
