Core Purpose of the Role
To lead and strategically develop inclusive practices across the school, ensuring that all students—regardless of background, ability, or need—can access high-quality education and achieve their full potential. The Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), contributing to the overall leadership and management of the school and deputising for the Headteacher when required.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Lead the development and implementation of the school’s inclusion and SEND strategy.
- Ensure the school meets statutory responsibilities under the Children and Families Act (2014), SEND Regulations (2014), SEND Code of Practice, and Equality Act (2010).
- Contribute to the school improvement plan, self-evaluation, and policy development.
Safeguarding and Welfare
- Take a proactive role in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, in line with statutory guidance and school policy.
- Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) team, particularly for vulnerable children with SEND.
- Attend weekly pastoral meetings and contribute to safeguarding strategies for students with identified or emerging needs.
- Ensure all staff are aware of safeguarding responsibilities related to SEND and inclusion.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for safeguarding and welfare concerns.
- Liaise with social care, early help teams, and external agencies to ensure coordinated support for vulnerable pupils.
SEND & Inclusion
- Act as SENCo, overseeing the SEND register, provision map, and EHCP processes.
- Lead on provision for Pupil Premium, Looked-After Children, and other vulnerable groups.
- Coordinate external agency involvement and represent the school in multi-agency meetings.
- Promote inclusive teaching practices and model Quality First Teaching.
Pastoral Leadership
- Lead on pastoral support and wellbeing across the school.
- Monitor attendance and behaviour of pupils and oversee the implementation of support strategies.
- Act as the designated teacher for looked-after and previously looked-after children.
Leadership & Management
- Line manage the Learning Support Team and oversee their professional development.
- Lead CPD for staff on SEND, inclusion, behaviour, equality, and safeguarding.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of interventions and inclusive practices.
- Ensure effective communication with families, staff, governors, and external partners.
Teaching & Learning
- Support curriculum development to ensure accessibility and success for all learners.
- Conduct learning walks, book scrutiny, and lesson observations to monitor inclusive practice.
- Lead on transition processes for SEND and vulnerable pupils between key stages and settings.
Other Duties
- Deputise for the Headteacher when required.
- Uphold the values of the school and trust.
- Fulfil duties as outlined in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD).
- Adhere to all school policies, including safeguarding, health and safety, and equality.
