About this Role

We are looking for a Senior Exam Invigilator to assist the Exams Officer with ensuring the smooth, compliant operation of internal and external exams by managing invigilation teams, setting up rooms, and ensuring (JCQ) regulations are strictly followed. To help maintain exam integrity, handle student queries, manage emergencies, assist with administrative tasks and accurately document procedures. This role requires high attention to detail, strong leadership, and calm communication under pressure.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Team Leadership: Supervising 1-20 invigilators, delegating tasks, ensuring all staff follow JCQ guidelines and school policies, to act as a stand in for the Exams Officer should they be absent to ensure the exam series can continue.

Exam Logistics: Preparing exam rooms, setting up seating plans, distributing/collecting scripts, ensuring all stationery is in place, and ensuring other invigilators have set their rooms up correctly according to regulations.

Conducting Exams: Supporting invigilators in delivering official announcements, managing start/finish times, and maintaining a silent, secure environment.

Candidate Support: Addressing student queries, managing student illness, supporting access arrangements, and dealing with late arrivals.

Compliance & Security: Supporting invigilators in preventing malpractice and managing exam incidents, and ensuring confidential papers are secure.

Documentation: Supporting invigilators in assuring that attendance registers are completely accurately in a timely fashion, and assisting the Exams Officer with packing scripts for dispatch.

Administrative Tasks: Checking each room has the required equipment/documentation in advance of the start of the exam series, and conducting equipment stock takes before/after exam series’. There is also a requirement to know where certain documents are kept on the Exams Officer’s drives to enable the exam series to continue in their absence.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience: Previous experience in invigilation or working in an education setting.

Leadership: Proven ability to manage teams and work independently.

Communication: Clear, confident communication skills for delivering announcements to large groups.

Attributes: High attention to detail, ability to remain calm under pressure, and strict professionalism.

Compliance: Strong understanding of exam board regulations (e.g. JCQ) and safeguarding children.

Requirements: Enhanced DBS check.

Working Hours

This is a fixed hours position at 260 hours allocated over the course of the academic year, with peak demands during January for internal/mock exams, then April to June for external exams, requiring flexibility during school hours. There will be other sporadic exams as well as administrative tasks that you will be notified of in advance. We may recruit two assistants to operate as a job share (130 hours per year each). It is estimated that 10-15 hours of this time will be allocated to administrative tasks.

Please note, it is expected that the Senior Invigilator/Exams Assistant is available for every exam during the summer series. You will still be able to work as a regular invigilator when not required as a senior/assistant on the invigilator hourly salary (miniumum wage).
