Grove
Road Primary School is seeking a committed and enthusiastic co‑opted
governor to join our Local Governing Body (LGB). This is a rewarding
opportunity to make a real difference to children’s education and to contribute
to the success of our school and wider community.
About the Role
As a co‑opted
governor, you will be appointed because of the skills, experience, or
perspective you can bring to the governing body. You do not need
previous governance experience—full induction and ongoing training will be
provided.
What Does the Local Governing Body Do?
Local
Governing Bodies play a vital strategic role within academy schools. They:
- Provide strategic
oversight and challenge to ensure high standards of education
- Hold school leaders to
account for educational performance, safeguarding, and wellbeing
- Help set the vision,
values, and culture of the school
- Support and monitor policies,
behaviour, inclusion, and community engagement
- Act as a critical friend,
balancing support with robust questioning
- Represent the interests of
pupils, parents, staff, and the local community
The LGB
does not manage the school day‑to‑day; instead, it focuses on the bigger
picture—ensuring the school continues to improve and thrive.
How Governors Benefit the School

bringing a range of skills and viewpoints, governors help the school to:
- Make better-informed
strategic decisions
- Strengthen accountability
and transparency
- Improve outcomes for pupils
- Ensure resources are used
effectively
- Maintain strong links with
families and the local community
Your
contribution will directly support the quality of education and opportunities
available to our children.
We
welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds. Skills and
experience that are especially valuable include (but are not limited to):
- Education, early years, or
SEND
- Finance, HR, legal, or
business, Health & Safety
- Community work, health, or
public services
- Data analysis or strategic
planning, IT and AI
Most
importantly, you should have:
- A commitment to children and
young people
- An interest in education
- A willingness to ask
questions and work as part of a team
Time Commitment
- Typically 6 governing body
meetings per year (usually evenings)
- Occasional school visits and
training sessions
- The term of office is
usually four years
