About this Role

Become a School Governor at Grove Road Primary School

Role: Co‑opted Governor (Local Governing Body)
Status: Voluntary

Grove Road Primary School is seeking a committed and enthusiastic co‑opted governor to join our Local Governing Body (LGB). This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to children’s education and to contribute to the success of our school and wider community.

About the Role

As a co‑opted governor, you will be appointed because of the skills, experience, or perspective you can bring to the governing body. You do not need previous governance experience—full induction and ongoing training will be provided.

What Does the Local Governing Body Do?

Local Governing Bodies play a vital strategic role within academy schools. They:

  • Provide strategic oversight and challenge to ensure high standards of education
  • Hold school leaders to account for educational performance, safeguarding, and wellbeing
  • Help set the vision, values, and culture of the school
  • Support and monitor policies, behaviour, inclusion, and community engagement
  • Act as a critical friend, balancing support with robust questioning
  • Represent the interests of pupils, parents, staff, and the local community

The LGB does not manage the school day‑to‑day; instead, it focuses on the bigger picture—ensuring the school continues to improve and thrive.

How Governors Benefit the School

By bringing a range of skills and viewpoints, governors help the school to:

  • Make better-informed strategic decisions
  • Strengthen accountability and transparency
  • Improve outcomes for pupils
  • Ensure resources are used effectively
  • Maintain strong links with families and the local community

Your contribution will directly support the quality of education and opportunities available to our children.

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds. Skills and experience that are especially valuable include (but are not limited to):

  • Education, early years, or SEND
  • Finance, HR, legal, or business, Health & Safety
  • Community work, health, or public services
  • Data analysis or strategic planning, IT and AI

Most importantly, you should have:

  • A commitment to children and young people
  • An interest in education
  • A willingness to ask questions and work as part of a team

Time Commitment

  • Typically 6 governing body meetings per year (usually evenings)
  • Occasional school visits and training sessions
  • The term of office is usually four years

Why Become a Governor?

  • Make a meaningful difference locally
  • Develop valuable skills and experience
  • Gain insight into how schools and academies work
  • Be part of a dedicated team supporting the next generation
