About this Role

Together with our community, we can achieve extraordinary things.

Inspire our children and young people to make goals and plans that challenges their potential to be their best.

Develop the knowledge, skills, and “tools” our children and young people need to achieve their goals.

Nurture and empower our children and young people to have the confidence and resilience to achieve their goals and succeed.

Appleton Academy is seeking a committed Assistant Caretaker to play a vital role in maintaining our site and supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of our school community.  This is an exciting opportunity to join a values-driven Trust where every role contributes directly to improving outcomes for children and young people.

As Assistant Caretaker, you will support the existing site team in ensuring that the Academy environment is safe, secure, clean and well-maintained for pupils, staff and visitors.   You will play a key role in the day-to-day operational running of the site, including opening and closing the premises, carrying out routine maintenance and basic repairs, supporting health and safety checks, and preparing spaces for lessons, events and activities.  The role requires a proactive approach with flexibility to respond to the changing needs of a busy school environment whilst maintaining high standards at all times.
We are seeking a reliable and motivated individual who takes pride in their work and demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility for the environment they help maintain.  The successful candidate will have practical skills and a ‘can-do’ attitude, with experience in general maintenance or site work being desirable but not essential.  You will understand the importance of health, safety and safeguarding in a school setting, be able to work independently as well as part of a team, and show a commitment to creating a positive, safe and welcoming environment for the whole school community.

The working hours (37 per week) for this post will be directed by the Estates Manager using a site team schedule;  however, the core working hours for this post will remain within the hours of 6.00am and 6.30pm.

The successful candidate will:

  • Undertake or arrange repairs/maintenance as instructed by the Estates Manager
  • Assist in the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the school building and grounds
  • Support with opening and locking the school premises
  • Monitor and replenish stock levels of cleaning and maintenance supplies
  • Ensure the site is clean, safe and hazard free for pupils and staff, reporting any issues to the Estates Manager
  • Be a team player with a practical, hands-on approach

We can offer:

  • A hard-working Leadership team dedicated to the success of our students
  • An inclusive approach to learning
  • High-quality Continuous Professional Development opportunities
  • Opportunities for further development and training
  • A healthy work-life balance
  • Free access to an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Free, on-site parking
  • Excellent employer pension contribution scheme.

We would warmly encourage any interested candidates to visit our school setting.   In order to do so, please contact our Recruitment team on 01274 600550 to make the necessary arrangements.

Exceed Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Shortlisted candidates will be subject to related online content checks, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025.  All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS check as well as successful completion of a probationary period.
