About Thornhill Academy

Thornhill Academy is a vibrant 11–16 secondary school with over 600 students, located close to Sunderland City Centre. We are proud of our diverse community, where students represent 14 ethnicities and speak 35 languages. Our uniqueness lies in this diversity, and we celebrate it every day.

At Thornhill, we:

  • Celebrate and embrace diversity, creating an inclusive culture.
  • Offer a wide programme of extra-curricular opportunities to enrich student life.
  • Work in partnership with parents and carers to ensure every young person’s success.

In December 2022, we were named as part of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme, and in July 2023, we became one of the first 50 schools to begin this exciting journey. We are now working towards bringing a state-of-the-art learning environment to our community.

The Role – Head of Year

We are seeking to appoint a dedicated, passionate, and highly organised Head of Year to join our pastoral team. This is a key role within the academy, where you will:

  • Oversee the academic progress, attendance, behaviour, and wellbeing of pupils within the year group.
  • Lead and support a team of Form Tutors, providing guidance and celebrating successes.
  • Build strong relationships with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure pupils are fully supported.
  • Play a key role in whole-school initiatives, assemblies, and events.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of young people.

What We’re Looking For

  • Supportive of our ethos and values, with a commitment to excellence and equity.
  • Self-motivated, organised, and an excellent communicator.
  • Able to motivate and inspire young people to reach their full potential.
  • Skilled in building positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Knowledgeable about safeguarding and experienced in supporting young people.

Experience of working with young people, families, and external agencies is essential. Experience with SIMS/CPOMS and leading assemblies is desirable but not essential.

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of a forward-thinking, inclusive Trust that celebrates diversity.
