About this Role

Witheridge C of E Academy is a wonderful primary school situated in the beautiful North Devon countryside near Tiverton. They are a caring and happy school with a passion for children's learning and well-being.  As a small school they are able to personalise the learning every child receives and offer an enriching curriculum. Witheridge C of E Academy currently has just over 100 pupils who are inspired by high quality teaching coupled with excellent facilities. 

The appointed person will work in close partnership with the relevant class teachers and will help to support a pupil, currently in the Foundation Stage Unit (FSU) to engage with their learning as they undertake their journey through the school. In service training will be provided where appropriate.

The successful applicant will ideally have experience of working with younger children and those who have delayed communication and interaction skills.  Training support will provided for the right candidate to build knowledge of a Total Communication approach and supporting children to navigate their social interactions and emotional responses.  We will consider all applicants with appropriate skills, passion and commitment for this important role.  The successful applicant should want to play a full part in the life of the school as part of a friendly and dedicated team, who are committed to high standards and who embodies the essential and desirable skills that truly make a difference in this field, listed below:

· Understanding of autism and speech, language, and communication needs.

· Ability to use clear language, visual supports, and alternative communication methods.

· Patience, flexibility, and strong observation skills.

· Experience with structured routines, behaviour management, and social support.

· Teamwork skills to collaborate with teachers, therapists, and parents.

· Empathy, calmness, and a commitment to ongoing learning.

· Knowledge of Communication and Interaction training.

· Experience or training in Portage early intervention.

· First Aid training, including managing sensory or behavioral incidents.

· Autism Awareness training or related specialist courses.

· Understanding of TEACCH, PECS, Makaton, or AAC communication methods.

· Experience supporting social interaction and emotional regulation.

· Awareness of and ability to provide intimate and personal care with sensitivity and dignity.

 

The role is temporary, linked to EHCP funding, and is subject to the child’s continued attendance at the school and/or the result of any review of their special needs.
