About this Role

We are seeking a patient, dedicated, and organised Literacy Support Assistant to support students who require additional help with reading and writing.

This role will focus primarily on delivering Fresh Start phonics interventions to our weakest readers in small groups, helping students develop confidence, fluency, and independence in their literacy skills. The successful candidate will also help organise and deliver a range of reading interventions, including Reciprocal Reading and 1:1 reading support.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of phonics and how students learn to read, alongside the ability to build positive relationships with young people who may lack confidence in their literacy abilities. We are looking for someone who is compassionate, encouraging, and committed to helping every student succeed.

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues responsible for literacy and the Learning Resource Centre manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver targeted Fresh Start phonics sessions to small groups and individual students
  • Support students with reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, and writing development
  • Deliver literacy interventions including Reciprocal Reading and 1:1 reading support
  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records of attendance and intervention outcomes
  • Work closely with teaching staff and the literacy team to support student achievement
  • Help create a positive and supportive learning environment for struggling readers

The Successful Candidate Will:

  • Have a strong knowledge of phonics and reading development
  • Be calm, patient, and supportive when working with students who find reading challenging
  • Be organised and able to manage their own time effectively
  • Be confident tracking attendance and maintaining intervention records
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be committed to improving outcomes for young people

Previous experience working with literacy interventions or supporting students with reading difficulties would be advantageous, but training will be provided for the right candidate.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to students’ confidence, progress, and future success through literacy support.

The school will provide any additional training necessary to allow the successful candidate to flourish in this role.
