About this Role

Teaching Assistant – Space Hub (Autism Specialist Provision)

Larwood School, Stevenage

Full-time | Term-time only

“This isn’t a typical classroom. And we’re not looking for typical.”

We are seeking a committed, reflective and resilient Teaching Assistant to join our Space Hub – a specialist provision supporting pupils with a high presentation of autism and/or learning differences.

Space Hub is a unique environment within our school. Previously a residential setting, it has been thoughtfully adapted into a calm, structured learning space designed to meet complex sensory and communication needs. Our pupils require adults who understand that behaviour is communication and who can provide consistency, patience and genuine care.

About this role

Good behaviour management skills, either whole class or with individual pupils, are a key part of this role. You will need the ability to remain calm, positive and consistent when supporting pupils who may present with high levels of anxiety and behaviours that challenge.

Whilst training is provided, experience of working with children in any capacity is advantageous. Ideally, candidates will have experience working with pupils with autism, learning differences, or social, emotional and mental health needs in a mainstream or specialist setting.

You will support pupils to develop their communication, independence and social skills, follow school routines and expectations, and engage in learning in a way that is meaningful to them.

A sense of humour, flexibility and a genuine commitment to supporting pupils with complex needs are essential.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis or in small groups to enable progress
  • Working alongside the class teacher to support whole-class learning
  • Using structured approaches (visual supports, routines, sensory strategies)
  • Supporting pupils to regulate emotions and behaviour
  • Adapting approaches to meet individual needs
  • Contributing to a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment

You may also bring particular strengths or interests (e.g. communication, sensory approaches, or curriculum areas), which we would be keen to develop further.

All staff are trained in the use of Therapeutic Thinking as our behaviour management approach.

What we are looking for:

  • Calm, patient and emotionally resilient individuals
  • A genuine interest in autism and inclusive practice
  • The ability to build strong, trusting relationships
  • Consistency and reliability, even when progress is gradual
  • A reflective approach and willingness to learn
  • Flexibility on a day-to-day basis

GCSE English and Maths Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) are essential.

A realistic note about the role

This role can be challenging. Some pupils may:

  • Struggle to attend school
  • Experience high levels of anxiety
  • Communicate distress through behaviour

However, this is also a deeply rewarding role. You will be part of a supportive team where small steps are celebrated and where your work will make a meaningful difference to pupils’ lives.

About our school

Larwood School was judged ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted (November 2022) and ‘Outstanding’ for Behaviour. We became an academy in November 2016 and are the lead school in a two-school multi-academy trust. We also provide outreach support to primary schools across Stevenage, focusing on behaviour and inclusive practice.

Staff wellbeing and development

We are committed to supporting our staff and offer:

Direct access to a GP at a time/place that suits you (Schools UK)

Dedicated staff attendance reward scheme

Access to counselling and physiotherapy (subject to conditions)

A comprehensive training and development programme

Opportunities for career progression and increased responsibility

Generous Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)

Interested?

We strongly encourage visits to the school so you can experience Space Hub and understand the role fully.

To arrange a visit, please contact Mrs Emma O’Brien on 01438 236333. Visits will be arranged with Mrs Bianca Osobu, Head of School.

Safeguarding statement

All appointments are subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks, including references, enhanced DBS and occupational health clearance. Larwood School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment.
