Voluntary Advisory Board Member based at  Merrydale Junior School

Would you like to make a difference?

Merrydale Junior School in Leicester is looking for a volunteer to join their School Advisory Board.

What are Advisory Boards and what do they do?

Advisory Boards are a group of individuals, sometimes known as governors, of all ages and from all walks of life and backgrounds who come together to work closely with the leaders of the schools to support the strategic development, contribute to the success and wellbeing of pupils and staff, and to work as part of a team actively promoting and supporting the school’s vision and values.

The Advisory Board is usually made of six members. This includes the Headteacher, elected staff member, two elected parent members and two appointed community members.

Do I need to have experience?

No prior knowledge or particular expertise is required – just a desire to make a difference to young peoples’ lives, give something back to the community, and join the largest volunteer force in the country. Full induction and programme of online training is provided to help you understand your role. You’ll have the opportunity to develop new skills and get to know a new group of people with a common focus.

Is it time-consuming?

You’ll need to be able to attend four meetings a year, alongside time to prepare for meeting and undertake training. In addition, you will be welcomed into school to meet pupils and staff and experience the environment and learning in action. Advisory Board Members are also encouraged to find an area of interest to lead on, such as Safeguarding, SEND, Disadvantaged and Quality of Education.

The role is voluntary, however you are entitled to ask your employer for time off to take up the role.

I’m interested, what next?

Anyone over the age of 18 and living in the UK can apply. If you feel this is for you, please don’t hesitate to contact clerk@discoverytrust.org to find out more. Discovery Trust is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. AB positions are subject to an Enhanced DBS check along with other relevant pre-appointment checks.

To apply kindly fill the application form attached and send it directly to clerk@discoverytrust.org
