About this Role

Are you an exceptional English teacher ready to take the next step into leadership? Do you have the passion, drive, and vision to help shape an ambitious English curriculum and inspire both students and colleagues? We are seeking a talented and motivated Second in Charge of English to support the strategic leadership of our thriving English department and help ensure outstanding outcomes for every learner.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an excellent teacher who is ready to develop their middle leadership experience, working closely with the Head of English to raise standards, support staff development, and foster a culture where reading, writing, and oracy are central to school life.

As Second in Charge of English, you will support the Head of English in leading a high-performing department, model outstanding teaching and learning across Key Stages 3 to 5, lead on curriculum development and innovative pedagogical practice, use assessment intelligently to drive progress and raise attainment, support, coach, and develop colleagues within the department, contribute to departmental quality assurance, planning, and evaluation and champion literacy and a love of reading across the school.

The successful candidate will have be an excellent classroom practitioner with a track record of strong outcomes, has a deep love of English literature and language, be ready to take on leadership responsibility and inspire others, have a track record of motivating, coaching, and support colleagues, is committed to inclusive practice and high expectations for all students, has excellent organisational and communication skills and is keen to contribute to whole-school improvement.

At Pinner High School, our pedagogical approach is based on the principles of Rosenshine. All our lessons begin with a do now activity, aimed at recalling knowledge. In addition, a high proportion of students are categorised as higher ability, we therefore expect appropriate challenge in learning. Learning episodes contain  challenge tasks in addition to main activities which support the progression of all students. Students often use green pens to self assess work and teachers use expert subject knowledge for assessment for learning.

“Lead the Love of Language. Shape the Future of English.”
