Early
Career Teacher: Applications welcomed
We are
excited to offer a full time Teacher of Latin with Humanities role to commence
in September 2026 or earlier subject to checks.
We seek a committed full time teacher
who is enthusiastic and passionate about Latin and the classical world and is
able to inspire a love of the subject in our students. We are seeking a subject
specialist who has the ability to teach Latin to GCSE and offer at least one
other of the Humanities subjects: History, Geography and/or Religious Education.
Latin has been taught in our Junior School since 2019 and has now been
on the Senior School timetable for three years. We were a Latin Excellence
Programme school and led the LEP Northern Hub, supporting other schools, until
the funding was axed by the current government in 2025. We continue to follow
the well-resourced LEP curriculum and also have good support from Classics for
All. Current Year 9 students will be the first cohort to be able to select
Latin as a GCSE option. All Senior School students take Latin and French in
Year 7 and then select one of these languages to continue to the end of KS3. Classes
are mixed ability as we believe passionately that every student should have the
opportunity to experience Latin.
Latin forms part of our energetic and exciting Humanities Faculty, comprising
of a team of professionals who work together and support each other. The staff
are all subject specialists and are passionate about what they teach and about achieving
excellent results. Student outcomes are good and we are looking to add further strength
to this team. The faculty is ambitious and forward looking and strives to
ensure that every student excels.
The successful candidate will be a reflective practitioner who is able
to maximise the potential of all our pupils. They will use teaching and
assessment effectively to ensure that all pupils know, remember and can apply
key knowledge and skills. We are also looking for a colleague who can make a
contribution to the wider life of the school, through extra-curricular clubs,
trips and visits – especially those which help to ignite a love of Latin and
the classical world in our students.
Our School:
Polam Hall School is a 4 – 16
all-through academy and is part of Woodard Academies Trust. We have 850 pupils
on roll, with one and a half forms of entry in our Primary Phase and four forms
in our Secondary Phase. Polam Hall is a school with a unique and long history
which today is proud to be a fully comprehensive school serving the young people
of Darlington. Our mission is to educate the whole child, developing
leadership, compassion, character and academic ambition, through the
combination of our Academic and Concordia Crescimus curricula. We have high
expectations and aspirations for every member of our school community.
Polam Hall is a community where staff
and students work together for common goals. We make every effort to develop
our staff team, offering professional development opportunities and the chance
to be part of a wider Trust, yet retaining the friendly atmosphere of a small
school. We are looking for energetic and enthusiastic people to join our team,
who have children at the heart of their practice and who will help us to drive
forward our aim: to deliver an outstanding education to every single one of our
pupils.
Visits to the school are welcome. If you would like to visit or to discuss the
post further please contact the administration team: information@phs.woodard.co.uk
Please
note you should use the supporting statement section of the application form to
clearly evidence your ability to meet the requirements outlined in the person
specification. The information in this section will be used to shortlist
applicants for the role and therefore it is important that you provide enough
detail to give a full picture of your skills and experience and what you can
contribute to teaching and learning at Polam Hall.
Polam Hall School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
