About this Role

We are a nurturing, learner-centred alternative provision in the heart of Bexley, built on kindness, and respect, . Our vibrant community champions every learner, providing a safe and supportive environment where young people can rebuild their trust in education, rediscover their strengths, and open doors to further education and pathways.

We believe relationships come first. Every interaction is an opportunity to restore confidence, inspire hope, and create meaningful change.

The Role

We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and skilled Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our dedicated team. This is a rewarding opportunity to work closely with learners who require a highly personalised, therapeutic, and nurturing approach to education.

You will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning, leading small group and 1:1 sessions, and helping learners re-engage with education in a way that feels safe, achievable, and empowering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead learning activities for individuals and small groups under the guidance of the teacher

  • Deliver targeted interventions to support academic progress and emotional wellbeing

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with learners who may have experienced barriers to education

  • Support the implementation of personalised learning plans

  • Promote a calm, respectful, and nurturing learning environment

  • Monitor, assess, and record learner progress

  • Support behaviour through restorative and trauma-informed approaches

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, families, and external professionals

  • Contribute to the wider life of the provision and its community ethos

What We’re Looking For

  • HLTA qualification or equivalent experience

  • Experience working with young people in alternative provision, SEND, SEMH, or similar settings

  • A patient, empathetic, and non-judgemental approach

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Confidence in leading learning independently

  • Understanding of trauma-informed and restorative practices

  • A genuine belief that every learner can succeed with the right support

What We Offer

  • A supportive and caring team environment

  • Ongoing professional development and training

  • The opportunity to make a real and lasting difference in young people’s lives

  • A workplace built on kindness, respect, and community

  • A role where relationships matter as much as results

If you are looking for a role where you can teach with compassion, make meaningful impact, and be part of a school community that values both staff and learners, we would love to hear from you.

Come and help us ensure every learner flourishes and every voice is heard.

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications for the role. Therefore, if you are interested, please submit your application as early as possible.

Break Through School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of every learner and we expect all our staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will require an enhanced DBS check, online checks, and references will be taken up before interview.
