Main Purpose of the Teaching Assistant
The Teaching Assistant will:
Work in partnership with class teachers to raise the learning and attainment of pupils
Promote pupils’ independence, self-esteem, confidence, and social inclusion
Provide support to pupils, individually or in groups, so they can access the curriculum, participate fully in learning, and experience a sense of achievement
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Demonstrate an informed and efficient approach to teaching and learning by using relevant strategies to support the teacher and raise achievement for all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Promote, support, and facilitate inclusion by encouraging participation of all pupils in learning and extracurricular activities
Support the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum that enables pupils to reach their full potential across all areas of learning
Use effective behaviour management strategies consistently in line with school policies and procedures
Support class teachers in maintaining good order and discipline, ensuring a safe and positive learning environment
Organise and manage teaching spaces and resources to create a stimulating and safe learning environment
Observe pupil progress and feed observations back to the class teacher
Supervise a class if the teacher is temporarily unavailable
Use ICT effectively to support and enhance pupils’ learning
Undertake any other relevant duties as directed by the class teacher
Planning
Contribute to assessment and planning by supporting the monitoring, recording, and reporting of pupil progress as appropriate to the role
Read and understand lesson plans provided in advance where available
Prepare the classroom and resources for lessons
Working with Staff, Parents/Carers, and Professionals
Communicate effectively with staff, pupils, parents, and carers under the direction of the class teacher
Share relevant knowledge of pupils with school staff and external professionals (education, health, and social care) to support informed decision-making
Contribute to meetings with parents and carers by providing feedback on pupil progress, attainment, and barriers to learning as directed
Keep relevant professionals informed of pupil progress and any concerns, in collaboration with the class teacher
Work collaboratively with teachers, colleagues, and specialist professionals within and beyond the school
Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with colleagues
Health and Safety
Promote the safety and wellbeing of all pupils
Follow safeguarding requirements in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and the school’s child protection policy
Provide support to children who are upset or unwell and respond appropriately to minor accidents
Professional Development
Reflect on practice and work with school leaders to develop skills and knowledge
Engage in relevant professional development to improve effectiveness in the role
Take opportunities to develop skills, qualifications, and experience with support from the school
Participate in the school’s appraisal process
Safeguarding and Other Responsibilities
Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education and Prevent duty requirements
Promote and safeguard the welfare of all pupils at all times
Follow all school policies and the staff code of conduct
