About this Role

Are you an ambitious teacher with a passion for understanding human behaviour, society, health, and belief systems? Hertswood Academy is seeking an inspiring and visionary Head of Social Sciences to provide professional leadership and management for our department.

This is a fantastic opportunity to shape a diverse curriculum that encompasses Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, and PRE (Philosophy, Religion, and Ethics), fostering a culture of constant improvement and securing high-quality teaching for all students.

Key Responsibilities

As the leader of this vital department, you will:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a clear, ambitious vision for the department that aligns with the overall school improvement plan. Formulate, monitor, and evaluate an annual department development plan using data to identify areas for growth.

  • Curriculum Design: Design and oversee a progressive, sequence-rich curriculum for Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 that meets exam board specifications for Psychology, Sociology, Health & Social Care, and PRE.

  • Teaching & Learning Excellence: Model outstanding classroom practice. Conduct regular learning walks, book looks, and formal lesson observations, providing constructive, actionable feedback to promote continuous pedagogical improvement.

  • Student Progress & Attainment: Systematically track and analyse internal and external assessment data to identify underachievement, designing and monitoring effective intervention strategies. Report regularly to senior leadership on exam predictions and external results.

  • Leading & Managing Staff: Efficiently deploy, manage, and support teaching and support staff. Act as an appraiser for designated team members , facilitate subject-specific CPD , and provide mentorship for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) or trainee teachers.

  • Resource & Financial Management: Manage the departmental budget effectively to ensure maximum value for money. Maintain safe, stimulating learning environments and up-to-date risk assessments.
