Role Summary

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant to join our team. You will work with children who have special or particular needs, either individually or in small groups, as directed by the class teacher and/or SENCO. You will help create a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment where every child can succeed.

Where pupils have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), you will support in meeting the specific needs outlined in their plan. You will liaise with teachers, the SENCO, parents/carers and external agencies to ensure coordinated, high‑quality support.


Main Responsibilities

School‑Related Duties

  • Follow school policies, procedures and relevant legislation, including safeguarding and behaviour management.
  • Assist with the planning and preparation of activities, including supporting initiatives such as phonics.
  • Help prepare, organise and maintain the classroom environment.
  • Monitor children’s needs and report them to the appropriate staff member.
  • Maintain records as required by the school.

Child‑Related Duties

  • Promote children’s physical, emotional, educational and social development.
  • Foster independence, confidence and self‑esteem, and observe and record progress.
  • Support pupils with SEND, including those with EHCPs.
  • Carry out reasonable personal care and hygiene tasks and administer basic first aid.
  • Assist with the movement of children around the school.

Additional Role Information

Supervision:
No direct line management responsibilities, although you may sometimes demonstrate tasks or guide trainees or colleagues.

Creativity:
Required when assisting in planning and delivering engaging, child‑centred learning activities.

Relationships:
Includes regular contact with pupils, staff, parents/carers and external professionals.

Work Environment:

  • Conflicting priorities linked to curriculum and care needs
  • Physical demands, including working with child‑height furniture
  • Occasional hygiene duties
  • Potential for challenging behaviour

Knowledge & Skills

Essential:

  • Effective communication with children and adults
  • Ability to empathise and establish positive relationships
  • Ability to work well as part of a team

Desirable:

  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • British Sign Language (BSL) Level 3, or willingness to complete training before starting the role

Salary & Working Pattern

Grade: NJC Grade 3, Points 6–9 (LCC pay scale)
Salary: £24,796 – £25,989 FTE
