Assistant CARETAKER

36.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per annum

£26,403 - £28,142 per annum, depending on experience and skills

We are looking for a reliable, energetic and organised Caretaker to join our busy team as soon as possible. The ideal candidate will be organised, friendly and a team player and will be willing to work hard around the school site, and use common sense to help keep the site safe, clean and in good repair.   

Responsibilities will include caretaking duties, maintenance work (including the grounds), some general and emergency cleaning, emergency repairs, portering and liaising with contractors and school users. Previous experience in a similar role is desirable but not essential.  Additional skills, such as DIY, painting and decorating, would be useful. 

We are ideally looking for someone who could work Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm.  A flexible approach and a willingness to occasionally cover colleagues will be helpful, especially during particularly busy periods, annual leave and absence. 

Applicants must be fit and healthy.  A clean driving licence would be useful, but not essential.

Our Site Team

The Site Team at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School plays a vital role in ensuring that the school’s historic, high-performing learning environment remains safe, attractive and fully operational for students, staff and visitors. Led by the Site Manager, the team oversees all aspects of premises management across the school’s extensive buildings and grounds. Their work supports the smooth daily running of the school while contributing to long-term infrastructure planning and development.

What the Site Team Does

The team is responsible for maintaining and developing the school site to the highest standards. Their core functions include:

•Maintenance & Repairs: Keeps buildings and facilities in good working order.

•Health & Safety: Manages compliance checks and safety standards across the site.

• Security: Ensures the school environment is safe and secure for all users.

• Contractor Management: Coordinates contractors and supports site projects.

•Grounds & Facilities: Oversees caretaking and grounds maintenance to keep the site presentable.

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Site Caretaker to join our thriving Secondary school, located in a vibrant setting and supporting over 1,400 pupils. We are seeking to appoint a capable and experienced person to contribute to and support the development of our expanding grammar school. As a valued member of our site team, you will be working closely with the Site Manager in the full range of duties to ensure a clean, safe and secure environment for users of the school buildings and grounds.

About the Role:

As our Assistant Caretaker, you will:

• Carry out physical checks of the buildings and take necessary action for any repairs, also making good of any areas which could be a source of danger to either the users or security of the building.

• Report any issues found and rectified or potential issues arising

•Open/close the building as required during the day

• Carry out routine cleaning duties using the appropriate materials and mechanical cleaning aids as necessary

• Check the buildings regularly to ensure no unauthorised persons are present
